UNCW’s Department of History will host Eva Landsberg, assistant professor of history at the University of Cincinnati, as the 25th annual Sherman Emerging Scholar Lecturer this fall.

Landsberg will deliver her lecture “Sugar and Strife: The Caribbean Roots of the American Revolution,” at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 14 in the Warwick Center Ballroom. She'll then take part in the Sherman Roundtable Discussion at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 15 at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

At Cincinnati, Landsberg teaches courses on Revolutionary North America’s political, economic, and cultural connections to the wider world. She is completing her first book, which explores the connections between the economics of Caribbean sugar and the issues of imperial rule that gave birth to the American Revolution.

"The 250th anniversary of the American Revolution brings a new opportunity to explore the origins of our nation," Landsberg said. "In this year’s Sherman Lecture, I’m looking forward to bringing an Atlantic perspective to the Revolution, to show how a deep-seated rivalry with the Caribbean colonies shaped many North Americans’ beliefs about their future within the British Empire."

Taylor Fain, chair of the UNCW Department of History, also remarked on this landmark year for scholarship and research about the Revolution.

"We are delighted to welcome Eva Landsberg as our 25th annual Sherman Emerging Scholar," he said. "Her thoughts on the international origins of the American Revolution should be engaging and challenging. They're certain to illuminate our revolutionary heritage in a thought-provoking way as we mark the 250th anniversary of the Revolution and the 25th anniversary of the Sherman Lecture series."

The Sherman Lecture Series, established through the generosity of the late Philip Sherman and his sister, the late Ann Sherman Skiba, brings emerging scholars to UNCW to share their research with the campus and community, fostering dialogue on history’s enduring role in shaping global understanding.
