Hundreds of thousands of residents may be losing their main source of communication: their landline telephone. Verizon filed an application last month to phase out its copper-based landline phone services in New York, Pennsylvania, Washington, DC, and seven other states. But residents worry there are few to no alternatives in rural communities.
