Aptera (SEV) now says it needs only about $25 million to start production of its Solar EV, down from the $40 to $45 million it quoted just seven weeks ago.

It’s good news on paper. But the market didn’t buy it: Aptera’s stock fell about 15% on the announcement, leaving the solar car startup with a market cap of roughly $69 million.

A smaller number, same problem

In its Q2 2026 results in August, Aptera said it needed $40 to $45 million to launch low-volume production at its Carlsbad facility, plus another $140 to $160 million to reach high volume.

The new plan, published today, is a lot leaner:

  • About $25 million to start production, with the first 40 vehicles built starting by the end of 2026
  • $40 million more to ramp to 500 vehicles per month, which Aptera calls self-sustaining
  • $50 million more for high-volume tooling, targeting about 20,000 vehicles a year

That’s roughly $115 million all-in, compared to $180 to $205 million before. Aptera credits its recent partnership with Launch Design, design-for-manufacturing changes, international suppliers, and a bill of materials updated with actual supplier quotes.

“This is a fundamentally leaner path to getting Aptera into customers’ hands,” said co-CEO Chris Anthony.

Customer deliveries are now pegged for early 2027, “subject to financing.”

The goalposts keep moving

We’ve heard versions of this before. In late 2024, Aptera was trying to raise $60 million to reach low-volume production and called its delivery timeline a “moving target.” Back then, the first 60 Launch Edition cars were supposed to ship in 2025.

In January, after a $9 million public offering at $2 per share, the company was still targeting customer deliveries in 2026. That’s now 2027.

And the cash position is thin. Aptera had $10.1 million in the bank at the end of June and burns $2 to $2.2 million a month on baseline operations, according to its 10-Q, which carries a going-concern warning. It raised another $6 million through a warrant deal in July and has a $75 million equity line of credit, though drawing on it means selling shares into a market that keeps marking them down.

So even $25 million is a big ask. It’s more than a third of what the entire company is worth on the stock market today.

The product is still the good part

None of this changes what makes the Aptera interesting. It’s a two-seat, three-wheeled EV so efficient that the solar panels on its body actually matter. TÜV Rheinland measured up to 4.75 kWh a day from the integrated solar in sunny conditions, which works out to around 40 miles of daily driving without plugging in.

Aptera also got its EPA Certificate of Conformity in June and has ordered bodies and chassis for the first 40 vehicles. It reports about 49,300 reservations.

Electrek’s Take

We love the Aptera concept. Make a car efficient enough and rooftop solar goes from a gimmick to a real fuel source. Lightyear and Sono Motors both tried and ran out of money before getting there. Aptera is the last serious attempt standing, and the TÜV numbers back up the concept.

But a cheaper plan is only good news if someone funds it. Aptera has struggled to raise money at almost any amount for two years now, and every raise dilutes shareholders further. The market’s 15% reaction tells you investors read today’s update as Aptera having no other way than dillute their ownership in order to get to production.
