Andrew Garfield claims he was intimidated acting alongside and taking direction from late Hollywood legend Robert Redford while making the 2007 motion picture Lions for Lambs.

'I'm terrified and nervous and pinching myself,' the Oscar-nominated actor, 43, said while appearing on Good Hang with Amy Poehler Tuesday.

Garfield said that Redford showing up to the set four hours late of the political drama helped replace his anxiety with anger.

'Then Bob is four hours late, and it's just like by that time I'm just pissed,' Garfield told Poehler, 55. 'I'm just angry.'

Garfield had been 23 and making his cinematic debut in the Afghanistan war-based film, which also featured Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep.

The Daily Mail has reached out to representatives for Garfield for further comment on the story.

Garfield, whose storyline as student Todd Hayes was tied in with Redford's Professor Stephen Malley, credited Redford for being 'so cool' as he was 'famously late' to film.

Garfield said of Redford, who died at 89 in September of 2025, 'A lot of the nerves had kind of dissipated because he was so loose and casual.

'He still dressed like he was in his 20s with a double denim. He wasn't aware that he was late. He was just like on his own Redford time.'

Garfield added of the Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid star: 'He was a beautiful, beautiful man - and very late all the time to everything.'

Poehler joked of Redford's lateness: 'Well, God is fair - I mean, he's so handsome there's got to be something wrong with him.'

Garfield said that despite the power imbalance, Redford was collaborative with him while making the movie.

'He would shoot himself, and then he would look at me after his first take, and he'd be like, "What do you think?"' Garfield said. 'He was directing as well, so all my scenes were with him.

'And he was like, "What do you think?" And I was like, "It's great. Really good, Robert Redford."'

Garfield said it was especially fulfilling when Redford would ask him if they should reshoot scenes they had worked on.

'He made me feel like it was my set and made me feel like I was an equal and like he knew it was my first movie,' Garfield said. 'He was so nice. He was so beautiful.'

Garfield said that prior to being cast in Lions for Lambs, he was not sure if his career would progress past the stage roles he'd been working in.

'It was like a theater play,' he said, 'and I had done only theater at that point - it was a lot of dialogue.'

Garfield also told Poehler about his experience working with filmmaker David Fincher on The Social Network.

The actor, who played Eduardo Saverin in the 2010 film about Facebook, said that he worked well with Fincher, who traditionally has his actors film a series of takes for each scene.

'I love it - f***ing love it,' Garfield said. 'Cause I love acting, and I love hard work, and I love sports, and I love not going home with anything left to give.

'There's nothing worse, as you know, than going home going, "I could have done that better." It sucks to feel it.'
