A South Florida family is demanding answers after deputies used a K-9 to arrest one of their loved ones.
Sheila Burke told NBC6 Wednesday that her nephew is not mentally well and believes the use of a K-9 was excessive. A witness recorded a video of the K-9 biting her nephew, which the aunt says is hard to watch.
“Neither one of them was in no threat to do what they did,” Burke said. “Why? That’s what I want to know why, and you know has a mental problem.”
According to an arrest report, Fricost Jerome went inside a maintenance shed at an apartment complex in Pompano Beach and took a toolbox. The property manager confronted Jerome, and he pulled out a box cutter from the toolbox.
The property manager told NBC6 that she told Jerome the toolbox wasn’t his, but he didn’t say anything. She said she was scared because of the situation, but she stepped back and called 911.
The property manager shared video from the clubhouse where she says you can see Jerome walking away with the toolbox and box cutter, and her by the door. A short time later, deputies say Jerome didn’t follow their commands before arresting him.
“Bad, real bad, discouraged about how everything went, how it happened, why did they do it, I feel really disgusted what they did to my nephew,” Burke said. “If you’re not in danger, why do that? If you aren’t getting hurt why do that? No weapon no nothing?”
Burke says her nephew is mentally ill. In 2023, police in Margate arrested Jerome for breaking into a church. Court documents show a judge dismissed the case in 2026 because Jerome was incompetent due to mental illness. Burke claims the deputies who arrested him Tuesday knew he struggled with his mental health.
“They done been around too many times to pick him up, take him to the hospital, they know him, so why do him like that and you know him,” Burke said. “He got on the ground, he didn’t resist or anything.”
A BSO spokesperson said in a statement, “On Tuesday, Broward Sheriff’s Office district deputies, K9 and Aviation were requested to respond to a report of an armed robbery in progress in Pompano Beach. Per agency policy, when K9s are used to apprehend suspects, like in Tuesday’s arrest of an armed suspect, the suspect receives medical treatment, and the use of force is reported to supervisors and thoroughly documented for an administrative review.”
Burke says the family is still questioning why.
“I know he has his little issues, he has done burglary but what BSO did is not called for,” Burke said.
Jerome is facing one count each of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, armed burglary and resisting arrest without violence.
