Red Velvet's Joy is officially preparing to return to the small screen. The singer and actress, credited by her real name Park Soo Young for the project, has joined Kim Hyun Jin and the rest of the cast for the first script reading of TVING's upcoming romantic drama "One-of-a-Kind Romance."

Based on the popular webtoon of the same name, the series centers on an unusual romance between an ordinary job seeker and a major celebrity. The drama is scheduled to premiere on TVING on Nov. 9, with its international rollout planned through Viu across Asia, the Middle East and Africa, as well as ABEMA in Japan.

The first script reading brought together director Kim Jin Young, writer Jeon Hyun Mi and the main cast as they began exploring the relationships and personalities at the center of the story.

In "One-of-a-Kind Romance", Joy plays Gong Yu Il, a job seeker who continues to approach life with optimism despite repeatedly facing difficulties in both her professional and romantic life.

Her circumstances change dramatically when she unexpectedly becomes the manager of top star Tak Mu I, played by Kim Hyun Jin. What begins as a professional relationship gradually develops into something more complicated as the two discover that their feelings for each other may extend beyond their roles.

Gong Yu Il's character is expected to bring plenty of warmth and energy to the drama. Despite the setbacks she experiences, she refuses to give up easily, making her journey toward love and a more stable life one of the central elements of the series.

For Joy, the role also carries particular significance as it marks her return to acting after approximately four years away from the small screen.

Kim Hyun Jin takes on the role of Tak Mu I, a popular star whose glamorous public image hides emotional wounds from a past stalking incident.

During the first script reading, Kim reportedly showed contrasting sides of the character, moving between Tak Mu I's playful and charming personality and the more vulnerable emotions hidden beneath his celebrity persona.

That contrast is expected to become an important part of the central romance. While Tak Mu I may appear confident and accustomed to being admired by millions, his past experiences have left him emotionally guarded.

His relationship with Gong Yu Il therefore has the potential to challenge the carefully maintained boundaries he has created around himself.

The script reading gave Joy and Kim Hyun Jin their first opportunity to establish the chemistry between their characters, with the production team reportedly paying close attention to the dynamic between the two leads.

The drama's romantic storyline will not be limited to Gong Yu Il and Tak Mu I. Shin Hyun Soo joins the cast as a celebrity chef who appears kind and approachable but has another side hidden beneath his public image. His character is expected to introduce another layer of intrigue as the story develops.

Kang Na Eon, meanwhile, plays an actress who does not hide her feelings for Tak Mu I. Her straightforward interest in the top star is expected to create additional tension around the developing relationship between the leads.

With several characters connected to the entertainment industry, the drama will explore the differences between public image and private emotions while maintaining its romantic and comedic elements.

"One-of-a-Kind Romance" is based on a webtoon that attracted attention with its premise of a romance between an ordinary woman and a famous star. The television adaptation will expand that relationship through the characters' professional interactions and personal histories.

The script reading marked the first time the principal cast came together to fully explore the story as a drama. Director Kim Jin Young and writer Jeon Hyun Mi worked alongside the actors to establish the tone and character relationships before filming progresses. The production is being handled by Corpus Korea.

For Joy, the project represents an important return to acting following a roughly four-year break. The Red Velvet member previously built an acting portfolio through projects including "The Ghost Detective," "Tempted," "Once Upon a Small Town" and "The One and Only." Her latest role gives her the opportunity to return with a romantic series that combines workplace situations, celebrity life and a developing love story.

Her casting has also generated interest among fans who have been waiting to see her take on another acting role.

With Joy stepping into the role of Gong Yu Il and Kim Hyun Jin portraying a celebrity carrying hidden emotional scars, "One-of-a-Kind Romance" is shaping up around a relationship that begins with an unexpected professional connection.

The drama will premiere on TVING on Nov. 9, while viewers in other regions will be able to follow the series through Viu and ABEMA as the international release rolls out.
