Putting an electronic gadget anywhere near a bath, let alone into one, does not make me feel relaxed: those old-school safety videos about the dangers of electrocution really embed themselves in your subconscious.

So the Lush Bath Bot, a floating speaker and light that turns your bath into a “sensory bathing experience”, had some work to do before it could help me “float into pure relaxation”.

The trouble is, it’s very cute. Designed to resemble a Lush bath bomb, it’s sleekly curved, with one LED at the top and another underneath.

Set-up is simple; it sits on a dock to charge while you download the Lush app on your phone. The bot pairs via Bluetooth, and then you can scroll through the library of experiences to find one to match your mood: categories include sleep, relax and party.

Each one lasts about 20 minutes and syncs 180-degree sounds (from disco beats to birdsong) with a light show. After a dalliance with disco, I settled on “float in magic” and entrusted the bot to the bath.

It’s water-resistant, but the guide emphasises that it mustn’t go under the surface, to protect the speaker: not the most relaxing instruction. Still, as it bobbed gently next to me, turning the water pink, then blue, then purple, it felt rather hypnotic and spa-like.

Plus, nobody was electrocuted. In fact, the only shock was the price — at £150, you might decide a trip to a real spa is a better bet.
