More than one million German households have installed solar panels on their balconies, creating a remarkably simple form of home energy generation that requires no rooftop access, professional installation, or major construction.

Known as Balkonkraftwerke, or balcony power plants, these compact systems typically consist of one or two solar panels connected to a small inverter and plugged into a household electrical circuit. The rapid growth of the technology has been driven largely by Germany’s large rental population and efforts to make solar power accessible to people who do not own their homes.

The approach addresses a major obstacle for renters. Roughly 55 percent of German households live in rented properties, meaning many residents have no control over the roofs where conventional solar systems are typically installed. A balcony, however, is one part of a property that tenants can often use more directly.

Germany has gradually simplified regulations governing plug-in solar systems. Recent reforms have reduced registration requirements, while landlords and homeowner associations face greater restrictions on preventing residents from installing balcony panels. The systems can also be removed and taken along when a tenant moves.

Under current rules, the inverter output of a balcony solar installation is generally limited to 800 watts. While that amount cannot power an entire home, it can offset a portion of a household’s everyday electricity consumption, including appliances that operate throughout the day.

A typical balcony system can generate hundreds of kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, depending heavily on its location, orientation, and local weather conditions. Rising electricity prices, zero VAT on some solar equipment, and subsidies offered by certain German cities have also helped improve the financial appeal of the systems.

The technology is not without limitations. Solar panels installed on poorly positioned or north-facing balconies will generate significantly less electricity, while surplus energy is often sent back into the grid without compensation. Battery systems can help households store excess daytime generation, although they may face different technical and regulatory requirements.

Still, the scale of Germany’s balcony solar boom demonstrates how small, decentralized systems can expand participation in renewable energy. Rather than waiting for homeowners to install large rooftop arrays, the program allows renters to generate electricity from the limited space they control.

With more than a million registered systems and additional installations continuing to appear across the country, Germany’s energy transition is increasingly visible from the street. In many apartment buildings, it now begins with a solar panel attached to a balcony railing and a cable plugged into the wall.
