FIDESZ emphasizes that, for the national government, culture encompassed not only high culture but also popular culture, and that it wanted to ensure access to it even for smaller towns. The minister followed the government’s guidelines. FIDESZ stands behind Minister Hankó, who has been targeted by former SZDSZ intellectuals and the TISZA government, wich seek to use him as a cautionary example for artists and audiences in the civic, national, and Christian cultural spheres.

The party makes it clear that it will closely monitor the proceedings and that those who act unlawfully against the former minister will not be able to evade personal accountability once national forces restore the rule of law.

What is currently happening in Hungary is a political witch hunt,

explained János Bóka, FIDESZ parliamentary group leader, in his Facebook video. According to him, it is perfectly clear what is going on: First, the intellectual circles of the FIDESZ community were targeted; next, party members and leaders will follow.

The parliamentary group leader expects that the witch hunt—aimed at breaking and intimidating FIDESZ and silencing those who believe in a sovereign Hungary—will begin as early as this week. “But we cannot be broken, we cannot be silenced, and we cannot be intimidated,” declared Bóka. “We are not afraid, and neither should you be!” was the parliamentary group leader’s message.

The fact that Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced the start of legal proceedings over the weekend is also raising questions. “He announces when an allegedly independent authority will launch investigations, what Parliament will do, and calls politicians ‘corrupt’ before any court has found them guilty,” notes Balázs Orbán, a FIDESZ member of the European Parliament.

Outrageous. This is the tempo of a communist people’s commissar preparing a political purge.

And the most outrageous part: the Brussels backed Hungarian Prime Minister simply posts the decisions on Facebook in advance. He announces when an allegedly independent authority will launch investigations, what Parliament will do, and calls politicians “corrupt” before any court has found them guilty.

We have seen this playbook before in Poland: allegations are used to justify going after the political right.

When the Prime Minister announces the decisions of supposedly independent institutions in advance, institutional independence is a fiction. This is political power taking control of the state machinery and turning it against its opponents. This is what a political purge looks like.
