Jon Stewart tore into an NBC News reporter after President Donald Trump abruptly ended a televised interview, mocking her attempt to keep the conversation going as 'one of the worst pleas in the history of journalism.'

Stewart's fiery criticism came during Monday night's episode of The Daily Show, as he dissected Trump's tense exchange with Kristen Welker on Meet the Press.

He argued that the president walked away because he was being challenged, not because of the rainy conditions repeatedly referenced during the broadcast.

The interview, recorded in Wisconsin, unraveled after Welker pressed Trump on some of his long-standing political claims, including his repeated assertions about the 2020 election and campaign promises regarding foreign conflicts.

As the questioning intensified, Trump accused NBC and other major networks of bias.

'Meet the Press is crooked,' Trump said. 'And so is ABC and CBS and CNN.'

Moments later, the president brought the interview to an abrupt end.

'You're a one-sided, crooked network. All right, let's call it quits, because I've had enough. Thank you, darling. Have a good time,' Trump said before walking away.

'Holy s***, storming out because you didn't like the question!,' Stewart exclaimed to viewers.

The comedian mocked Trump's decision to leave, describing it as evidence that the president struggles when confronted with direct questioning.

'Now, you could view this as the hissy fit of an incredibly fragile man baby whose paper-thin skin can't handle venturing out of the sycophantic embrace of his tongue-bathing acolytes...

'It really is just that. It's sad. It's very sad,' Stewart said.

Earlier in the segment, Stewart poked fun at the surprisingly cordial atmosphere that initially characterized the interview.

The two had repeatedly commented on heavy rain pounding the roof during their conversation, with both Welker and Trump referencing the weather several times.

'As we're having this conversation, we can hear a little bit of rain,' Welker said at one point.

'No, a lot of rain. A lot of rain,' Trump responded.

Stewart jokingly portrayed the exchange as a romantic comedy before explaining where he believed the mood shifted.

According to Stewart, the turning point came when Welker challenged Trump on a campaign promise he frequently made during his presidential run.

'Mr. President, one of your consistent campaign promises was no new wars. What changed?' Welker asked.

Trump replied: 'First of all, I didn't guarantee no war.'

Stewart pushed back, showing clips of Trump previously telling voters, 'I'm not going to start a war,' 'I'm going to stop wars,' and 'I'll keep you out of wars.'

The comedian argued that the interview escalated further when Welker pressed Trump on his continued claims that the 2020 election was rigged.

After Trump repeated those allegations, Welker responded: 'You've never presented evidence that the 2020 election was rigged.'

When Trump pointed to events in California, Welker followed up: 'Where's the evidence to that? Where's the evidence?'

Stewart celebrated the exchange as a rare moment in which a television interviewer continued pressing the president rather than moving on.

But the comedian reserved some of his sharpest criticism for what happened after Trump ended the interview.

As the president departed, Welker called after him: 'Mr. President, let's ... please, I traveled all the way to Wisconsin.'

That appeal immediately became the target of Stewart's ridicule.

'This is where Kristen Welker nearly undoes all of the good work she did with one of the worst pleas in the history of journalism,' Stewart said.

He then launched into an extended comedic riff imagining additional reasons the president should stay.

'You can't leave, sir! I was in business class!' Stewart joked. 'Mr President, please, Wisconsin. Wheel of Fortune is on an hour earlier here.'

Stewart also took issue with Welker's suggestion at the conclusion of the program that weather conditions may have complicated the interview.

'I spoke with President Trump on Saturday,' Welker told viewers. 'And we both acknowledged the complications during the interview posed by the rain.'

That explanation prompted an incredulous response from Stewart.

'What? You were inside!' he shouted. 'There was no challenge from the rain.'

The comedian argued that Trump routinely conducts interviews in far noisier environments and said the weather was not responsible for the breakdown in the conversation.

'Donald Trump didn't storm out because of the rain,' Stewart said. 'He stormed out because he was challenged, not because he was distracted.'

Stewart urged journalists to become more aggressive when questioning public officials and to avoid, in his view, making excuses in order to maintain access. 

'So maybe it's time we stop making excuses for that man in order to preserve access to his constant bulls***,' he said.

Welker ended the segment by revealing that Trump had agreed to sit down for another interview with Meet the Press.

Stewart's response was immediate.

'There you go,' he said. 'And what are the odds that the result of that interview will be any different?'
