π¬π§π’π§ π Stannordβs AI teaches spacecraft to βimagineβ docking with the International Space Station
Docking may seem simple, but it is actually a delicate orbital choreography. The spacecraft and the station are travelling at approximately 28,000 km/h, and their greatest distance from one another is in this region. It is like parallel parking in a two-car garage. As you accelerate forwards, you begin to βfloatβ in orbit, and no amount of air resistance can slow you down.
For decades, engineers, physicists and pilots have been working on this, fine-tuning the trajectory. Stannordβs researchers have proposed a different approach: an AI that carries out βmental simulationsβ, running through possible scenarios and selecting safe manoeuvres before firing the engines. The preprints are available on arXiv. The aim is docking, minimising the risk of collision and minor errors, rather than actual testing of the system, which has yet to move from the drawing board to space.
