IN SHORT: A front page apparently published by the Daily Telegraph claims the Kenyan governor and her son face a UK money laundering case. But the newspaper front page has been digitally manipulated.

Posts circulating on Facebook and X show what appears to be the front page of the British newspaper Daily Telegraph, with the headline: "Kenyan politician and her son face jail sentences in the UK over money-laundering case."

It includes a colour photograph of Kenyan politician Wavinya Ndeti.

The text alleges that Ndeti and her son Charles Oduwale face jail sentences in the United Kingdom over an alleged US$5.27 million (about KSh683 million) money laundering case and are due to appear at Isleworth crown court.

The posts began circulating around 10 August 2026 and have collectively attracted more than 6,800 views and 200 comments.

Context

Ndeti is the governor of Machakos county in eastern Kenya. She won the seat in the 9 August 2022 general election, becoming the county's first female governor.

Kenya's next general election is scheduled for August 2027, and Ndeti has indicated that she intends to seek another term.

Similar claims circulated in September 2024, while Ndeti was in Britain, alleging that she and her son had been detained over money laundering. Ndeti denied the allegations, describing them as false and threatening legal action against those spreading them.

She later returned to Kenya with her son after nearly three weeks in the UK. There was no evidence to support the allegations.

The latest version, circulating since August 2026, repeats the earlier allegations and adds that a UK newspaper reported the case on its front page.

But is the claim accurate? We checked.

Newspaper image is fake and claim false

Several details show that the purported Daily Telegraph front page has been fabricated.

The date reads "Monday, June 10, 2026", but 10 June 2026 was a Wednesday. The price is also given as "one shilling", an old British currency denomination discontinued during the country's transition to decimal currency.

The masthead, "The Daily Telegraph and Morning Post", is another clue. The title was used after the Morning Post merged with the Daily Telegraph in 1937 and was dropped during a 1969 redesign.

Other stories on the page concern events from the second world war, including the scuttling of the German battleship Admiral Graf Spee and Allied war financing. A genuine copy of the Daily Telegraph and Morning Post from December 1939 contains the Graf Spee scuttling story, showing that the Ndeti article was added to an old front page.

More importantly, the genuine Daily Telegraph front page for 10 June 2026 looks markedly different, carries different stories and does not contain the Ndeti report.

There is no corroboration from credible news outlets or UK government sources that Ndeti and her son were arrested or are facing such a case in the UK.

The claim that Ndeti and her son face a UK money laundering case is false. It relies on a digitally manipulated image of an old Daily Telegraph newspaper.
