A civilian was arrested after breaching a Florida air force base and violently attacking responding officers.

The 6th Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs Office told the Daily Mail that the unauthorized civilian burst through the perimeter of MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa around 1pm on Saturday.

The individual 'violently engaged' with police officers who responded to the incident before being detained, per the statement.

The statement noted that 'both individuals sustained non–life–threatening injuries' and were taken in for medical care.

Authorities have not revealed who the assailant taken into custody was or more details about what happened.

The Tampa site, where US Central Command headquarters are located, has more than 7,400 active duty military members on base.

MacDill Air Force Base posted on Facebook shortly before 2.30pm Eastern time that the Dale Mabry Gate was 'currently closed to inbound and outbound traffic until further notice' with people asked to avoid the area.

The base's statement said the Bayshore Gate remained open and noted that further updates would be provided as they became available. An investigation is ongoing.

The Dale Mabry Gate is usually open 24 hours a day throughout the week, according to the MacDill Air Force Base.

Meanwhile, the air force base usually keeps the Bayshore Gate closed on Saturdays, as well as Sundays.

The air force base houses US Central Command, which is overseeing operations against Iran.

A public calendar for the base only listed one event on Saturday, which was a library fall festival from 11am to 1pm.

There is no indication that the altercation and subsequent arrest was related to that event.

MacDill Air Force Base has seen other security incidents this year, including on March 10 when Alen Zheng, 20, was charged with trying to detonate an improvised explosive at the base's visitor's center.

Zheng, of Land O'Lakes, failed to set off the device, which was safely disassembled by law enforcement. 

The visitor's center is near the Dale Mabry entrance gate, as well.

Zheng's sister, 27-year-old Ann Mary Zheng, was also charged by federal authorities for allegedly helping her brother avoid capture.

He is believed to currently be in China. 

Eight days after Zheng allegedly attempted to set off the explosive, 35-year-old Jonathan James Elder allegedly called MacDill Air Force Base and asked: 'How did you like the surprise at the MacDill Visitor Center?'

'Tick tick boom,' he yelled, according to a complaint cited by the US Attorney's Office in the Middle District of Florida. 'It's gonna be between your eyes.'

The threat caused the base's gates to close and forced on-base personnel to shelter in place for roughly four hours.

Other than US Central Command, MacDill also serves as the headquarters for US Special Operations Command and the Special Operations Command Central, as well as Marine Corps Forces Central Command.
