A young champion boxer may never fight again after suffering a serious brain bleed just minutes after winning a bout, leaving him critically ill in hospital.

Dexter Mole, 15, won his fight at Ashton Masonic Hall in Ashton-under-Lyne on September 11, but collapsed minutes later.

The youngster showed immediate signs of a brain bleed and was rushed to hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery and was placed on a ventilator in intensive care.

He is now showing some positive signs, is breathing on his own and responding to relatives' voices. But Dexter is still unconscious and the full impacts of his injury are not yet known.

His brother Morgan, 28, is running a half-marathon to raise money for charity Ronald McDonald House, which supports families of children in hospital, after their support for his parents, who have barely left their son's side.

The teenager, who has already achieved a stunning record for such a young athlete and last year became North West Champion in his age category, fights for Magic Hatton Amateur Boxing Club, run by former welterweight title holder Matthew Hatton.

Matthew is the brother of Ricky Hatton, a champion boxer and trainer who was found dead at his home in September 2025.

Dexter was competing against a rival in the club's first home fight night of the season.

It is understood there were no concerns about Dexter's match or any of the blows delivered by his opponent, and he ultimately came out on top.

England Boxing was approached by the Daily Mail and asked if any investigation is underway into the incident. The sporting body has not yet responded. 

As is standard practice after a bout, he was assessed by the on-site doctor, but just minutes later Dexter fell to the floor in a stiff position which showed he could have a serious brain bleed.

Once called by an official at the venue, paramedics arrived within minutes and the teenager was rushed to a nearby hospital.

He underwent two hours of emergency surgery and has been in intensive care ever since.

But the youngster is now showing some signs of recovery.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Morgan said: 'Dexter is now stable. He still remains in intensive care, and he's come out of the induced coma.

'He's showing little signs of responding. He's wriggling about, because obviously he's so used to being active, so this is a total change for him.

'He does little things, you can ask, he like squeezes your hand, which he is doing. He's just not really opened his eyes yet.'

Morgan told how just 24 hours after Dexter was rushed to hospital, Ronald McDonald House stepped in and found a room for his parents to stay within easy walking distance.

'It was just such a change to have a private space where you've got your own bathroom, you can shower, you've got privacy.

'The rooms are clean and they're nice rooms with windows. Just little things you wouldn't even consider like having a window is making such a big difference to the environment.

'Anything you could need, toiletries, supplies, they're willing to offer.'

Morgan said 'sporty' Dexter – who also plays football, runs, and goes to the gym, has never had any sign of injury before.

His coaches have visited him frequently and the family has provided a statement on what happened to England Boxing.

'It's come as a total shock, there's been nothing like this before,' he added. 'The doctors aren't sure if it's an accumulation of things or an underlying issue, they just don't know.

'The hardest bit is every day you don't know what situation you are going to be faced with. But he's a strong kid.

'He won his fight, which I'm kind of glad of because the likelihood of him boxing ever again is very, very slim.'

Morgan is running the Manchester Half Marathon on October 4. He wasn't originally planning to raise money for charity but following Dexter's hospitalisation, wanted to give back to the cause that has been supporting his family.

Although his training has, understandably, been disrupted, he told the Mail he is determined to complete the race.

'I'm telling myself, you're not just doing it for yourself anymore. I'm doing it for my brother, and I'm doing it for the charity, and for all these people [who have donated] now.'
