Operatives of the Anti-Cult Unit of the Enugu State Police Command have been accused of storming a family residence at 4am, threatening occupants, and seizing the personal belongings of a 20-year-old man after allegedly failing to find the person they were searching for.

The operatives reportedly raided the residence of the Ifenze family in Amorji Nike, Enugu East Local Government Area, on September 10, 2026, by 4am in search of Chibueze Kingsley Ifenze, the brother of the 20-year-old, Izu Chukwu Ifenze Nelson.

Nelson told the Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) on Thursday that the officers did not explain why they were looking for his brother or show the family any warrant before carrying out the operation.

When Chibueze was not found at the residence, the operatives allegedly turned their attention to Nelson and searched his room.

Nelson alleged that the officers took three mobile phones, a laptop, chargers, two power banks and other personal belongings.

He also alleged that the operation left members of the family frightened, claiming that his mother was threatened with being shot when she questioned the officers about the reason for the raid.

The circumstances surrounding the seizure of Nelson’s belongings have now become a major part of a complaint filed by RULAAC with the Enugu State Police Command.

According to the complaint, Nelson’s uncle subsequently visited the Anti-Cult Unit office to recover the seized property.

The family said they encountered an officer identified as “Chief Ugwu” and alleged that they were asked to pay N100,000 before the belongings would be released.

Okechukwu Nwanguma, Executive Director of RULAAC, told SaharaReporters that the organisation is seeking clarification from the Enugu State Police Command before drawing conclusions about the alleged monetary demand.

In a complaint sent to the Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, RULAAC requested clarification on several aspects of the incident.

The organisation asked the Command to establish whether operatives of its Anti-Cult Unit carried out the September 10 operation, the identities of the officers involved and why Chibueze Kingsley Ifenze was being sought.

RULAAC also asked whether Nelson’s property was taken during the operation and, if so, whether the items were properly documented as exhibits and the legal basis for their continued retention.

The organisation further requested clarification on the identity and status of the officer identified as “Chief Ugwu,” whose telephone number it listed as well as his alleged role in the incident.

It also asked the Command to investigate the circumstances surrounding the reported demand for N100,000 before Nelson’s belongings could be released.

“RULAAC is reaching out in the spirit of verification, accountability and prompt resolution,” the complaint stated.

“If Nelson's personal property is being held without any lawful evidential basis, we respectfully request the Command's intervention to facilitate its immediate return. We also believe the allegation of a monetary demand deserves verification and appropriate investigation.”

The organisation said it would appreciate a response from the police so it could accurately advise Nelson and reflect the Command’s position in its documentation of the case.

RULAAC said the police spokesperson was aware of the complaint and had promised to follow up for necessary action.

Meanwhile, the officer identified by the family as “Chief Ugwu” has denied involvement in the operation.

According to RULAAC, the officer called and said he lives within the area but had no connection with the raid.

The family, however, disputed his claim, maintaining that they saw the officer among the operatives who raided their residence.

Further enquiries by SaharaReporters to the Enugu State Police Command regarding the allegations, including the reported seizure of the items and demand for N100,000, were unsuccessful.

SP Ndukwe did not answer calls to his telephone as of the time of filing this report.
