A woman has died after being hit by a vehicle on a highway in the New South Wales Snowy Monaro region.

Emergency services were called to the incident on Monaro Highway, 1km south of Bredbo, at about 6.30pm on Friday after reports of a pedestrian hit by a vehicle.

The woman, who has yet to be formally identified, was believed to be aged in her 60s, a NSW Police spokesperson said.

Officers from Monaro Police District and NSW Ambulance paramedics attended and treated the woman, but she died at the scene. 

'The driver, a 54-year-old man, was uninjured and taken to hospital for mandatory testing,' police said.

'An investigation into the circumstances of the crash has commenced.'

Motorists were urged to avoid the area and localised traffic diversions were in place.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
