The South-West monsoon has withdrawn from most parts of Punjab; Haryana; Rajasthan; entire Delhi; some parts of Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat on Wednesday even as a remnant of the rain-making deep depression from the Bay of Bengal is likely head towards the region over next couple of days bringing a wave of showers.

The line of withdrawal passes through Gurdaspur; Chandigarh; Muzaffarnagar; Aligarh; Dholpur; Udaipur; Deesa and Naliya. But a western disturbance as a trough runs roughly along Lucknow and Gorakhpur while a cyclonic circulation lay over north-west Uttar Pradesh. These features would meet up with the incoming depression and can potentially set up isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over the region. 

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast isolated extremely heavy rainfall for parts of the South Peninsula and Central India with focus on Telangana; Odisha; Chhattisgarh; and heavy to very rainfall over a number of places across West India; North-West India; and East and North-East India into the weekend. High winds, lightning and thunderstorms too have been forecast for disparate areas.

On Wednesday, the deep depression lay about 60 km south-east of Kalingapatnam (Andhra Pradesh); 140 km east-northeast of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh);150 km south of Gopalpur (Odisha); and 240 km south-southwest of Puri (Odisha). It was expected to cross north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coasts between Vishakhapatnam and Gopalpur, close to Kalingapatnam as a deep depression by night. 

After running into Uttar Pradesh; and later into Delhi-Chandigarh; and Haryana, the system may die out by Tuesday next, allowing monsoon withdrawal to resume. Rain-suppressing anticyclonic circulation will gradually take hold over the Arabian Sea, followed by the Bay of Bengal as September ends. Some late-season thundershowers are indicated for the South Peninsula in the first week of October. 

Transition to north-east monsoon will have to wait until the anticyclones settle in over both the Arabian Sea and the Bay, and a season-heralding easterly wind regime establishes to their southern flanks. For this to happen, the south-westerly monsoon has to cease completely. The transition to north-east monsoon normally comes into its own by the middle of October.
