Three hikers had to be rescued from California’s Mount Shasta after relying heavily on Google Gemini to plan a climb that went dangerously wrong, leaving them stranded overnight in a steep canyon.

The group began its ascent at 3 a.m. and did not reach the summit until 7 p.m., despite guidance for climbers to turn around if they have not reached the top by noon. They then attempted to descend in darkness, became lost, and ultimately spent the night in Mud Creek Canyon before Forest Service rangers and rescue volunteers reached them the following morning.

The details of the incident were reported by the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities said the hikers had used Google’s AI chatbot Gemini to help plan their expedition, including determining what supplies to bring.

The sheriff’s office said the AI guidance contributed to the group’s poor preparation, particularly because the hikers reportedly brought significantly less food and water than they ultimately needed. What had been planned as an eight-hour ascent turned into a much longer ordeal.

After reaching the summit seven hours later than the recommended turnaround time, the three men began descending in the dark. At one point, they contacted the sheriff’s office seeking directions but were unable to safely navigate their way back and ended up in Mud Creek Canyon.

Officials stopped short of placing all responsibility on Gemini, as the hikers also made several decisions that increased the risk of the expedition. Still, the incident has become another example of the potential dangers of relying too heavily on artificial intelligence for activities where inaccurate information can have serious consequences.

The sheriff’s office urged hikers to contact the local U.S. Forest Service ranger station before attempting a Mount Shasta climb and emphasized that AI tools should not be the sole source of information for trip planning.

AI chatbots can provide useful suggestions and summarize information, but they can also generate inaccurate or incomplete advice. For high-risk activities such as mountain climbing, experts generally recommend consulting official sources and experienced professionals rather than relying exclusively on an AI-generated plan.

The three hikers were eventually rescued safely, but their experience offers a cautionary reminder as AI becomes increasingly integrated into everyday decision-making. A chatbot may be useful for research, but on a mountain, it cannot replace proper preparation, local knowledge, and sound judgment.
