Long Island students are facing discipline for holding lewd signs taunting players from the opposing team at a high school football game.
The signs made by students from Sachem High School North showed photos of female friends of players on the William Floyd High School football team, along with lewd and sexually explicit statements. Photos of the teens holding up the signs quickly circulated on social media.
A scuffle was also recorded on video, reportedly showing a fight between one of the females shown on the sign and a group of Sachem North students.
Paul Horst, a relative of one of the William Floyd players shared the photos on social media to raise awareness about the incident.
“Simply horrific, it’s sexual harassment,” Horst told NBC New York. “I hear they may have been up for about 15 minutes but they should have been immediately removed.”
The superintendent of the Sachem School District, Patti Trombetta, sent a message to parents in the Sachem school community late Tuesday night. The letter reads:
“As many of you are aware, an incident occurred at our Friday night football game against William Floyd. We take the concerns raised about the signs displayed by some of our students very seriously. The messages shown do not align with the respect and sportsmanship we expect from our student body, and this behavior will not be tolerated.
It is our responsibility to support our students while holding them accountable for their actions and helping them understand the impact of their choices. As a Sachem community, we sincerely apologize to the William Floyd community for any hurt caused. Moving forward, we will continue to reinforce the vital importance of sportsmanship, respect, and responsibility.”
Horst did not receive the message and read it in published reports. He responded by saying “Nobody in the William Floyd community wants an apology, the victims are the ones who deserve an apology.”
The students who held up the signs are facing school discipline and the superintendent said she intends to issue an apology at Wednesday night’s school board meeting.
“I think it’s disgusting and these little boys should probably learn to respect women,” said Emma Conroy who graduated Sachem North about five years ago. “I wish that these parents would just tell their boys to not drag women into everything.”
“There’s no reason to attack their personal lives,” said Mario Rodriguez, of Stony Brook. “It’s high school football, they shouldn’t be doing anything like that.”
