Autumn is here, and it's time for us to revamp our wardrobes, replacing lighter fabrics with items that are sturdier and offer warmth. Colour-wise, autumnal tones tend to reflect the seasonal shift, with rich burgundies, racing green hues, and caramel shades at the forefront of our minds when the temperature drops.

The Princess of Wales has been very busy lately, from settling in her eldest son, Prince George, at Eton, to heading to the Isle of Bute last week.

One thing I've noticed as a Fashion Editor who specialises in royal style is that Kate may alter her wardrobe to suit changing temperatures, but her ethos stays the same. She wears items that are always mindful of her position and are elegant. You can be sure that even when the royal is dressed casually, her timeless approach will still be visible.

Take her latest look when she accompanied her husband, Prince William, for an engagement on the Isle of Bute, and debuted a new outfit that had serious autumn connotations.

Kate donned a pair of brown skinny jeans by Holland Cooper alongside a simple turtleneck jumper. This look is undeniably casual, but she elevated it with boots and a fabulous new trench coat by Burberry. With its tailored finish, the chocolate-brown outerwear staple was made even more distinctive by the brand's signature house check lining, visible at the bottom of the hem. The double-breasted design brought instant structure to Kate's otherwise low-key ensemble.

We last saw Zara Tindall earlier this month at the Cornbury Park Horse Trials, which are held in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire. (would use cut-out, might get charged again otherwise)

The equestrian-loving royal looked elegant yet modern in her timeless autumnal attire, donning a pair of dark denim barrel jeans, brown boots, a denim shirt, and a boxy barn jacket by Fairfax & Favor.

The durable jacket had a slightly cropped, relaxed fit, and Zara made it more casual still by wearing her chestnut-toned handbag cross-body. Zara is a huge fan of wearing her decadent handbag collection cross-body. By doing so, it gives her looks a more relaxed, off-duty aesthetic. Kate rarely does this, preferring top-handled bags like the late Queen Elizabeth II.

In 2024, Zara beamed as she was spotted sporting a gorgeous trench coat - the 'Frances' style from Fairfax & Favor in the tan hue. The structured number, which was worn done up, featured a collared neckline, a belted waist, and double-breasted buttons across the front. Once again, she wore a cross-body style, which slightly dressed down her look.

The Princess of Wales was the picture of elegance when she dropped her son, Prince George, off at Eton College for his first day of secondary education.

Marking the milestone with fashion, Kate stepped out in a beautiful, bottle-green dress she first wore in 2023, by one of her favourite brands, Emilia Wickstead. The classic style featured a rounded neckline and fell below the knee in an A-line silhouette with a floaty skirt that looked fluid as she walked.

This autumnal look was formal, glamorous yet respectful. We've not seen Zara wear a dress like this for quite some time, because she isn't a working royal, so she doesn't have to adhere to the same formal royal dress code protocols. However, she would wear a style like this to a public royal event, such as Royal Ascot, Buckingham Palace garden parties or national remembrance services.
