That sounds like a PHP error rather than a settings problem. The Customizer loads, then something in the theme trips up and the page gives up before the controls appear. The email from WordPress backs that up. It only sends those when a fatal error occurs.

To find out what’s failing, we need to see the error itself. The easiest way is to switch on WordPress debug logging. This guide walks through it:

Once that’s on, activate Vantage and open the Customizer again. Then have a look in wp-content/debug.log and paste the last few lines here. That will tell us exactly where it’s breaking.

If you can, also let us know your PHP version. You’ll find it under ToolsSite HealthInfoServer. Unfortunately, we don’t have any similar reports and can’t recreate the issue locally or on our demo server.

Thanks for the quick response. I agree, it’s a PHP problem, at least I see a lot of “php” in the URL before it times out. Weirdly, I can get to the Customizer when I activate a different theme and then use the Live Preview.

I recently switched hosts and am having some issues with the file manager, so it may be a bit before I can do the debugging. I am using 8.2 php.

Thanks for the update. No rush on the file manager.

In the meantime, the email WordPress sent you should help. When a fatal error occurs, that email includes the error details near the bottom, usually with a file path and line number. If you can paste that section here, it will likely tell us exactly what’s failing.

PHP 8.2 is fine. Vantage runs on it without issue.

One other thing to check while you wait. Go to ToolsSite HealthInfoServer and note the PHP memory limit. A low limit on the new host would explain the slow load followed by a timeout. If you have a hosting control panel, most hosts also show a PHP error log there, which would save you the debug.log step.

It looks like that directory is missing, which might be the problem.



The PHP limit is 256M

I’m not having problems with other themes.

Thanks, that’s the detail we needed.

The directory isn’t missing. PHP found the file and was reading it when the server reached its 30 second limit. That file is a list of Google Fonts. It normally loads in well under a second.

Please send your host the error message above and ask them to check why PHP is timing out on this file. Also ask if they can raise max_execution_time to 120 or more.
