Chicago's oldest house raising funds to keep its doors open

When you walk into one of the many historic buildings in Chicago, it’s like taking a step back into time, but one of the city’s oldest homes could be in jeopardy.
The Noble Seymour Crippen House is located at 5624 N. Newark Ave in Norwood Park, and is maintained by the Norwood Park Historical Society.
According to officials, the nonprofit needs more donations to keep the house open to the public.
“The house was built in 1833, but in unincorporated Cook County,” said Arthur Krumery, acting president of Norwood Park Historical Society. “Then it was annexed to Chicago. So, this is the oldest house in Chicago today. It’s not on the usual tourist path.”
The house is maintained by volunteers. They do everything from sweeping and dusting, to conducting tours and especially fundraising, which is essential right now.
The Norwood Park Historical Society receives no public funding. The suggested donation for visitors is $5 from visitors.
On September 26th, the society is holding a Stems and Steins fundraiser. The goal is to of course raise money – but also raise awareness about a home that has a place in Chicago’s rich history.
“We have a lot of potential that we want to realize and share with the community for generations to come,” Krumery said.
