This season, Varsity Maine reporters will offer up suggestions each week for three games that are worth a drive to watch in person, with a brief explanation of why we think these games are worth a fan’s time.

Watch out for the angry team coming off a setback. That would be the Rangers, who came in as a favorite to defend their Class C championship but got humbled by Leavitt in a 30-12 loss last week. So, was it a bad week? Or did Greely have flaws exposed? The Rangers can restate their case as one of Class C’s top teams with a win this week, but they’ll have to do it against a perennial contender that is looking to find another gear after a 14-13 win over Winslow followed by a 21-8 victory over Medomak Valley. Luke Piper, who threw for two touchdowns last week, leads Greely, while running back Brady Godin has started strong for Wells.

This is your old-fashioned Pine Tree Conference battle, between two teams that have staged entertaining matchups, often with clashing styles of play. It was a one-point game when these teams played last year, with Skowhegan eking out a 14-13 win after four straight Lawrence victories in the series, and the River Hawks’ wide-open passing attack will look for the edge against Lawrence’s powerful ground game. Skowhegan quarterback Austin Lancaster threw for 194 yards and ran for 113 against Cony last week, but the River Hawks will need an answer for the combo of Keegan Littlefield and Jaiden Hebert, who combined for 256 yards in last week’s win over Fryeburg Academy.

Two teams off to strong starts will get an early challenge to show who’s better — and add some clarity to the power structure in the eight-man Large School South region. Yarmouth has looked like a powerhouse, scoring 44 and then 48 points in wins over Lake Region and Spruce Mountain, and has a weapon in quarterback Iggy McGrath, who’s one of the most dynamic passers in the state. Don’t expect the Clippers to have an easy time, however, because the Capers have scored 108 points in their two wins over Gray-New Gloucester and Mount View. Cape Elizabeth went 1-7 last year; so far, the Capers look like a challenger. Saturday will provide a litmus test.
