A major project delivering new council housing across Leeds has passed a milestone after delivering more than 1,000 homes.

A total of 1,116 energy-efficient and affordable properties have now been built or acquired through Leeds City Council’s Council Housing Growth Programme (CHGP), with more than 200 delivered over the last 12 months alone.

When combined with schemes from housing associations and developer contributions, 943 affordable homes were delivered in Leeds during 2025/26 - the highest annual total in 30 years.

Recent council completions include 100 family homes, 16 wheelchair-accessible bungalows, and the Gascoigne House extra care facility in Middleton, alongside developments in Gipton and Seacroft.

In addition to new builds, the council has acquired properties from private developments, including 41 homes at Persimmon’s Morwick Green site off York Road, as well as acquisitions at Laneside Farm in Morley North and Wellington Mount in Cross Gates & Whinmoor.

Supported by funding from Homes England, these properties are being made available for social rent.

A further £200 million has been committed by the council’s executive board for the programme’s second phase, running from 2026 to 2031.

Councillor Tom Hinchcliffe, executive member for transport and planning, added: "Building houses alone isn’t enough. We are also ensuring that new homes in Leeds meet a range of needs and, crucially, are in suitable and sustainable locations.

"Our work alongside registered providers and other partners in the last year has driven affordable housing delivery in the city to its highest level in 30 years."
