An elderly woman was found dead floating in a community pool in Alabama - and police have now arrested one of her 'acquaintances' for murder.

Anastasia Tsefia Sudarsana, 30, was charged with one count of murder for her alleged involvement in the death of a 70-year-old woman in Hoover.

The unnamed victim was found unresponsive in a swimming pool on Little Valley Road at 9.32pm on September 3 after someone called 911.

First responders tried to save her life upon arrival, but were unsuccessful. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police claimed that physical evidence showed there was a struggle just before her death, leading them to treat the tragedy as a homicide.

Sudarsana was arrested and detectives said that she was an acquaintance of the deceased - but did not provide further details on their relationship.

According to local reports, Sudarsana is an orphan from Ukraine who was adopted from an orphanage in Kyiv by an American family when she was a little girl.

Police wrote in the press release: 'Detectives responded to the scene to begin their investigation and located a person of interest near the area and determined she was an acquaintance of the victim.

'The evidence showed a physical struggle occurred just before the victim's death, which is being investigated as a homicide', according to ABC 33/40.

Police have not disclosed a possible motive for the homicide.  

Officials have yet to announce the cause and manner of the woman’s death. The Jefferson County Coroner and Medical Examiner’s Office will release those findings after completing its investigation.

Police turned over evidence from the investigation to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office in Birmingham.

Sudarsana was transferred to the Jefferson County Jail, where she is held without bond.
