As we wait for consumer Googlebooks to launch, Google shared today that it is “transitioning [its] Google Meet hardware portfolio from ChromeOS to Android.”

Existing Google Meet hardware consists of touchscreen controllers, cameras, microphones, speakers, and what’s essentially a Chromebox to run scheduling software and the actual video conferencing suite.

Google is replacing ChromeOS with Android going forward. That said, “existing investments in ChromeOS devices are protected,” with full software support: “We will continue delivering security patches, stability updates, and ChromeOS releases for all Google Meet hardware running ChromeOS.” There are no changes to support timelines, with hardware continuing to work until 2030 for recent models. 

Hardware partners like Logitech, CTL, and Asus will “gradually end manufacturing and sales for ChromeOS-based hardware according to the following timelines.”
