Leicester Tigers assistant coach Alex Davies is set to join Wales as a skills and kicking specialist in time for November’s Nations Championship campaign. 

Wales head coach Steve Tandy is on the look-out for a new addition to his set-up to fulfil the role held for so many years by former No 10 great Neil Jenkins. 

During Wales’ glory years under Warren Gatland’s guidance, Jenkins was a key figure behind the scenes. 

He worked with the likes of Dan Biggar and Leigh Halfpenny during a golden era between 2008 and 2019 where Six Nations Grand Slams and Championship titles were commonplace for Wales. 

Jenkins was immensely popular with Wales' players too. 

He was a key part of the team which reached the 2019 World Cup semi-finals and briefly topped World Rugby’s rankings that year, while also working alongside Gatland in the same kicking role on four straight British & Irish Lions tours in 2009, 2013, 2017 and 2021. 

Jenkins is still employed by the Welsh Rugby Union today and works with Wales’ academy and regional teams, but hasn’t been with the senior national team for the past 12 months. 

In that time, former Wales backs Halfpenny and Rhys Patchell have both taken on the kicking coach role on an interim basis.  

But Halfpenny has taken up a kicking and skills coach role with his former employers Cardiff while Patchell is now working with Italian club side Benetton alongside former Wales head coach Wayne Pivac. 

It means the WRU has been keen to add a new, full-time employee. 

Daily Mail Sport understands Davies – currently working at PREM Rugby side Leicester under their head coach Geoff Parling – will be that man. 

The 40-year-old has previously worked with England Women, Rosslyn Park and the Netherlands after finishing his playing career with Bath in 2020. 

His imminent appointment means he will join Tandy, Matt Sherratt, Danny Wilson, Peter Murchie, Dan Lydiate and Paul James on the Wales coaching staff. 

It also comes at a time of continuing off-field upheaval for the Welsh game as the Welsh Rugby Union continues to try and move from four professional men’s teams to three.
