Arayia L. Hudson, a 38-year-old Tampa mother who was arrested and charged in connection with the 2024 death of her 4-year-old son, Joseph Hudson, has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to the charges, according to reports from People, the Tampa Bay Times, and WFLA.

Hudson pleaded guilty in August 2026 to second-degree murder and aggravated child abuse. According to WFLA and the Tampa Bay Times, the plea agreement allowed her to avoid the possibility of a death sentence.

She was also sentenced to 15 years of probation following her release from prison.

According to People, the Office of the State Attorney for Florida’s 13th Judicial Circuit said the agreement took into account “significant mitigation” presented by Hudson’s defense, as well as the potential impact a trial could have had on child witnesses.

The case began in the early morning hours of June 29, 2024. According to a 2024 press release from Tampa.gov, Tampa Police officers responded to a 911 call at approximately 4:37 a.m. at a home in the 8400 block of N. 15th St. The caller, Joseph’s mother, Arayia Hudson, reported that her son was unresponsive.

Officers arrived within minutes and immediately began performing CPR. Joseph was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Initially, Hudson reportedly told investigators that Joseph had begun coughing and struggling to breathe after eating potato chips and drinking water.

But as detectives investigated the circumstances surrounding the boy’s death, evidence emerged that pointed to something far more serious.

A medical examination revealed that Joseph had suffered numerous injuries, including bruises, abrasions and internal bleeding. An autopsy determined that he died from blunt force trauma to his head and torso.

Investigators also uncovered evidence suggesting that the abuse had been concealed. Hudson reportedly told authorities that she was disciplining Joseph and had used tinted makeup to cover bruises around his eyes.

A July 2024 press release from the Hillsborough State Attorney’s Office detailed additional allegations uncovered during the investigation that were chilling. According to prosecutors, Hudson admitted to repeatedly hitting Joseph and slamming his head against a bathroom wall after the child made a mess in the bathroom.

One of Hudson’s other children, who was 9 years old at the time, reportedly told police that he witnessed the beating. The child said Joseph was “almost unconscious” after being kicked and struck by his mother.

The Medical Examiner’s Office determined that the 4-year-old died as a result of blunt force trauma to his torso and head.

Investigators also said Hudson initially lied about the circumstances surrounding Joseph’s injuries. She later admitted to police that she had struck him multiple times and used tinted sunscreen to conceal bruising around his eyes in the days following the alleged abuse.

According to prosecutors, Hudson’s two other children also told police that their mother would regularly make them hold Joseph’s hands behind him so that he could not protect himself while she beat him.

At the time of Hudson’s arrest, State Attorney Suzy Lopez condemned the circumstances surrounding Joseph’s death.

“The facts of this case will make anyone’s stomach churn. This defendant stole the life of an innocent child, and we will make sure she is held accountable for this horrific crime. This young boy’s family should be planning for him to begin kindergarten, not planning his funeral. We will make sure this defendant doesn’t have a chance to hurt another innocent child again,” she said.

On July 1, 2024, shortly before 7:30 p.m., Hudson was arrested at her home and initially charged with first-degree murder while engaged in aggravated child abuse.

She was transported to Orient Road Jail.

Following her arrest, Joseph’s siblings were placed with their biological fathers, who did not live in the home.

Hudson’s case would ultimately change significantly when she entered a guilty plea in August 2026.

Rather than proceeding to trial on the original first-degree murder charge, Hudson pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and aggravated child abuse as part of a negotiated agreement.

According to WFLA, Arayia L. Hudson will face extensive restrictions once she is released from prison.

Under the terms of her sentence agreement, she is prohibited from having any contact with anyone under the age of 18. She is also prohibited from visiting, working or volunteering at locations where children regularly gather.

Hudson must also complete an anger-management course and undergo a psychological or mental-health assessment. She must follow any treatment recommended as a result of that assessment.

In addition, she will be subject to random drug testing and warrantless searches.

Those requirements are in addition to the standard conditions of probation, which include reporting to a probation officer when required, maintaining employment, remaining at a designated address and complying with all laws.

She will also be prohibited from owning or carrying a firearm or other weapon without permission from her probation officer and from using illegal drugs.
