Thousands of people have backed Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones’ call for the government to do more to tackle excessively noisy, illegally modified vehicle exhausts.

The commissioner launched a petition last month to find out what the people of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight think about the issue.

It’s currently against the law to make an exhaust louder, yet there’s no legally enforceable roadside decibel limit. That makes it harder for police forces nationwide to take positive action.

Ms Jones wants that changed and said: “Over 4,400 people took part in my survey and what was clear is that excessive vehicle noise is not only viewed as an annoyance but an issue that affects wellbeing, road safety and quality of life in our communities.

“Nearly half of respondents told me they are impacted on a daily basis. Many detailed how it’s causing them anxiety and stress, impacting their sleep and their ability to work in and enjoy their homes.

“Concerns were also raised about how it’s often linked to dangerous driving. This is unacceptable. Sixty per cent of respondents have now joined me in urging the government to give police forces an objective and enforceable roadside decibel limit alongside standardised noise-measurement equipment. Ministers need to take note and take action.”

A broad range of enforcement measures were suggested by respondents including illegally modified exhausts being flagged and failed in MOTs, vehicle seizures for repeat offenders, higher fines and penalty points.

According to the Department for Transport, the maximum legal limit for most new cars is around 70 decibels (dB), which is the same as the sound coming from a regular washing machine. EU noise standards state the legal limit for new motorcycles is between 73 and 77dB.

The PCC is writing to the Home Secretary and the Department for Transport to demand action and showcase the impact it is having on people here. She has invited all Hampshire and Isle of Wight’s MPs to sign her letter.

Donna Jones added: “Having clear, consistent national guidance will not only help police and local authorities collect better evidence, but it will also act as a strong deterrent.

“Drivers and riders need to understand the rules and consequences. That comes from education and proper enforcement.

“I want officers freed up from paperwork and red tape and back on the front line.”
