A leading Republican recently made a major claim about Sen. Mitch McConnell's return to the Senate, but in response to being grilled with questions from CNN, he admitted the truth about who he has actually been speaking to about the situation.Rep. James Comer is a Kentucky Republican and currently one of the more powerful members of Congress, given his role as head of the Oversight Committee. Earlier this month, he made the eyebrow-raising claim that McConnell, a fellow Kentuckian who has been absent from the Senate for months due to health issues, would be returning when the chamber reconvenes from its recess on September 14.McConnell was first rushed to the hospital in mid-June when he was found unresponsive at his home, with reports suggesting that he may have suffered cardiac arrest. In a statement some time later, McConnell claimed to have been unresponsive due to a fall, and that he was kept in the hospital due to a case of pneumonia. His office now claims that he is undergoing physical therapy in preparation for his return to work.Despite those claims, McConnell has not been seen or heard from in public since his hospitalization, prompting widespread speculation that he had either died or was in worse shape than his staff let on. Two photos of the senator alongside his wife did little to squash that speculation, with Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear also claiming that he has not heard from McConnell.When pressed about his September 14 claim, Comer told CNN, "I expect that. I sure hope so," and also admitted that he had not actually been in communication with McConnell himself.“I have not talked to Leader McConnell," Comer said. "I’ve talked to his staff, many of whom are from my district originally. And they have all said it’s their goal for Senator McConnell to be here when the Senate comes in.”CNN also reached out to McConnell's staff directly about Comer's claim, with spokeswoman Stephanie Penn saying that there are "no scheduling announcements at this time.""McConnell, a childhood polio survivor, has faced a series of health issues in recent years, including multiple falls," CNN explained further. "In 2023, he froze mid-sentence during a news conference on Capitol Hill... Along with his own statement, McConnell included a note from the attending physician of Congress, who described the injuries after the fall at his Washington, DC, home as 'minor.' The physician added that 'McConnell has experienced several falls throughout the year that have been attributed to his post-polio condition.'"
