GM has been stubbornly standing by its decision to axe Android Auto and Apple CarPlay from many of its newer vehicles in recent years, despite loud and constant negative feedback from consumers. In its latest software update for two new trucks, GM has found the “sweet spot” for implementing Android Auto and CarPlay, but it’s unclear if that compromise will extend to other vehicles.

A new software experience – based on Android Automotive / Google built-in – debuting in the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and 2027 GMC Sierra will see GM’s software not only get a nice new coat of paint, but also some welcome functionality. As detailed by CNBC, the update will “proactively surface relevant controls” such as call controls and even a garage door opener. Both vehicles have plenty of physical controls, too.

The biggest news here, though, is GM finding a new way to implement Android Auto and CarPlay integration.

GM announced in 2023 that it would remove phone projection systems from its vehicles while embracing Android Automotive and native functionality in its infotainment system, a decision that has not been positively embraced by customers. While GM has not backed down from this change on its electric vehicles, many of its vehicles still support both platforms.

The change here is that the Silverado and Sierra will support Android Auto and CarPlay, but in a new windowed mode. The projection appears on a part of the display, with aspects of the native infotainment coming through around the sides so you can still easily control parts of the car that projection systems cannot without actually closing anything.

Speaking to The Verge, GM group product manager for Google built-in, projection, and profiles Colin McCormick explained that this is the “sweet spot.”

I think we’re landing in a spot where… we don’t have a customer that has to decide, “Oh, I’m going to use projection, or, oh, I want to use the native system…” That’s our sweet spot.

That said, there’s no word here on whether or not GM will actually bring Android Auto and CarPlay back to more of its vehicles. Gas-powered vehicles remain with support for phone projection, but that’s still missing in its EVs, including the latest Chevy Bolt that launched earlier this year.
