In an era where electronic rider aids and sophisticated engine management systems dominate motorcycle engineering, one custom Triumph Thruxton has taken an entirely different path. Built by owner Rob in collaboration with Tom of Hitchcock’s Motorcycles and specialists including DWR Racing, the project demonstrates that contemporary motorcycles can still embrace traditional mechanical engineering without sacrificing craftsmanship or performance.
Originally conceived for the 2024 Bike Shed Moto Show, the Thruxton evolved far beyond a cosmetic customization. What began as discussions surrounding an exhaust upgrade quickly transformed into a complete mechanical reimagining that required nearly every major system on the motorcycle to be reconsidered.
Returning a Modern Classic to Its Mechanical RootsThe defining feature of the build is its conversion from Triumph’s modern electronic fuel injection to a fully carbureted induction system. Rather than simply replacing throttle bodies, the team removed virtually every electronic riding aid from the motorcycle, including the ABS, traction control, CAN bus architecture, and factory ECU.
Achieving this transformation demanded extensive engineering. A bespoke wiring harness was developed around a Motogadget M-Unit Blue, while an ECU from a carbureted Triumph 865 platform was carefully adapted to operate the Thruxton’s 270-degree parallel-twin engine. The result is a motorcycle that functions with little more than fuel, air, spark, and meticulous calibration—a remarkably uncommon achievement on a modern Triumph.
Motorsport Engineering Shapes the ExhaustTom’s background in Formula One motorsport heavily influenced the fabrication of the titanium exhaust system. Every section was individually designed to complement the carburetor conversion while maintaining optimal packaging within the frame.
Rather than relying on pie-cut tubing purely for visual effect, each transition serves a functional purpose, allowing extremely tight radii while preserving smooth gas flow. High-mounted titanium silencers are finished with billet tapered end caps that integrate discreet sound-dampening inserts, adding both refinement and acoustic character.
As the exhaust has accumulated heat cycles, its naturally blued titanium finish has become one of the motorcycle’s defining visual signatures.
Bare Metal as a Design StatementInstead of hiding the motorcycle’s structure beneath paint, the builders embraced exposed materials throughout the project. The steel frame was stripped to bare metal before receiving a transparent ceramic coating that preserves its raw industrial appearance while preventing corrosion.
The fuel tank received similar treatment, retaining its brushed-metal finish beneath a clear protective coating with Hitchcock’s logo hand-applied as a subtle finishing touch. Combined with the evolving colors of the titanium exhaust, the motorcycle presents an understated yet highly technical aesthetic.
Performance Beyond AppearanceThe engineering extends well beyond visual presentation. Maxton cartridge fork internals replace the standard suspension components, while matching rear shocks were individually tuned for the owner’s riding style. Wider Dunlop GP100 tires required modifications to the rear wheel, drivetrain alignment, and sprocket offsets to accommodate the broader 180-section rear tire.
Additional upgrades include Motogadget switchgear and instrumentation, custom-machined triple clamps, HEL brake components, lightweight racing electronics, and numerous bespoke brackets and fabricated components that dramatically simplify the motorcycle’s overall architecture.
A Showcase of Collaborative CraftsmanshipPerhaps the most impressive aspect of the project is not any single modification but the collaboration behind it. Fabricators, engine builders, suspension specialists, upholsterers, and finishers each contributed expertise to create a machine that feels cohesive rather than assembled from disparate aftermarket parts.
The completed Thruxton demonstrates that true custom engineering is about more than replacing components. By combining traditional mechanical principles with modern fabrication techniques, the team has produced a motorcycle that honors the spirit of classic British performance while showcasing the possibilities of contemporary craftsmanship.
