You’ve likely heard about Amendment 3, the property tax measure headed to Florida’s November 2026 ballot. After careful review, 1000 Friends of Florida has decided to declare our opposition.

We’re deeply concerned about Amendment 3’s impact. An analysis by state economists, delivered only after legislators rushed the measure through a two-day special legislative session, projects that it would gut local government revenue by roughly $5 billion in its first year and $12 billion by its fifth. That’s the money that pays for our road repairs, public safety, libraries, parks, water protection, and the community planning needed to manage our state’s rapid growth and development.

That promised tax relief would be limited and unevenly shared. A one-size-fits-all cut ignores how different Florida’s communities really are, hitting hardest in less affluent rural areas and in neighborhoods of full-time, homesteaded residents – while weakening the conservation and planning work that protects our water, wild spaces, and the quality of life that makes Florida home.

There is a better path. The Taxation and Budget Reform Commission, charged with evaluating Florida’s tax structure, is already scheduled to convene in 2027. Reform of this magnitude belongs in that vetted, deliberative process, not locked into our Constitution through a measure rushed to the ballot too soon.
