A man who heroically saved passengers during the Huntingdon train attack has been offered a dream holiday by British Airways.

Ten people were injured in the mass stabbing on the London North Eastern Railway (LNER) Doncaster to London King's Cross train on November 1.

One of the passengers, Stephen Crean, 61, was stabbed seven times after he tried to protect other passengers, armed with nothing but his fists.

He was heading home after watching Nottingham Forest vs Manchester United.

Mr Crean was due to jet off to Austria on November 5 to watch Forest take on Sturm Graz in the Europa League on the 6th.

Sadly, due to the injuries he suffered in the attack he was unable to fly and reached out to Ryanair for a refund.

However, the budget airline refused to give Mr Crean his money back and instead told him he should have taken out travel insurance.

'All Ryanair air fares are non-refundable, which is why we strongly recommend passengers take out travel insurance in order to protect themselves if they can't travel,' a Ryanair spokesperson said.

Fortunately, another airline has kindly made Mr Crean another offer to make up for him missing his beloved team play.

British Airways has given the football fan two business class return tickets to Porto so he can watch Forest vs Sporting Braga on January 22.

What's more, the airline went ahead and booked Mr Crean in a five-star hotel for two nights.

Nottingham Forest have also gifted the 61-year-old tickets for the game. 

Calum Laming, British Airways' chief customer officer, said: 'Stephen's actions that day were heroic. In a moment of terrifying danger, he put the safety and welfare of others ahead of his own.

'We're delighted to offer him this gesture as a small way of expressing our gratitude and recognition for his remarkable courage and bravery.'

Mr Crean commented: 'So many people have been so kind since the incident happened, it's been incredibly overwhelming.

'I'm really grateful to British Airways for making this happen and I can't wait to get on the plane to Portugal to watch the Reds.'

When the news broke that Ryanair would not be refunding Mr Crean, Forest fans spoke out against the decision, with some calling for a boycott of the airline. 

Kevin George said: 'He put his life on the line to protect other people and Ryanair's response is absolutely disgusting.

'There are many Forest fans flying out to Austria today and using Ryanair to get there. Hopefully fans will start to boycott the airline over the fact they've refused to refund a hero who put himself on the line for others.' 

Philip Chambers added: 'It's shocking what Ryanair have done and Stephen is gutted he can't come.'
