Earlier this month, a tweet about how many random celebrities were at the premiere of Never Say Never, the 2011 Justin Bieber documentary, went viral on X.
The caption: “throwback to 2011 when celebrities attended justin bieber's Never Say Never premiere,” was posted alongside a video that showed everybody from Ariana Grande to Kendall and Kylie Jenner posing for photographers on the purple carpet.
The post has already been seen more than 50 million times, racking up over 96,000 likes, and thousands of quote-tweets and replies as people rushed to analyze this relic from pop culture past.
However, it was Zendaya’s appearance in the video that arguably went the most viral, with social media users being left struck by how she fake-laughed on the carpet while apparently attempting to nail a perfect Disney-star candid.
An incredibly viral quote-tweet of the original video joked: “zendaya with the severe case of ijbolitis oh she wanted that candid shot so bad😭😭,” while another simply cropped the clip to just Zendaya’s moment with the caption: “Jaksjdjsisjsjsjakaj😭😭,” and before long, a new meme was born.
But now, fans have discovered another iconic Zendaya moment from the Never Say Never premiere, in the form of a heavily PR-trained interview, where she appears wary of committing to being a full-fledged Belieber.
In an interview, a reporter from Clevver TV asks little Z how she feels about 17-year-old Justin, asking: “Have you ever met him before?” to which Zendaya replies: “No, I haven’t actually, but I think I’ll meet him tonight.”
“What do you think you’re going to say?” the interviewer presses, and Zendaya bluntly says: “Hi,” she then jokes: “Hi, what’s up, Biebs!” Before seemingly remembering herself and sheepishly laughing.
Things get really interesting when Zendaya is asked: “Are you a big time Belieber yourself?” She frowns and looks off into the distance as she quietly says: “Yeah.”
The star then furrows her brow, and causally adds: “I think he’s pretty cool… I mean, I’m not obsessed or anything like that, but I think he’s an amazing artist. And he’s… Y’know, he’s chosen the right path.”
This clip was shared to X with the caption: “they way zendaya didn’t gaf about justin bieber 😭,” and immediately received more than 55,000 likes. Others were quick to share their thoughts in the quote tweets, with one reading: “So cute how she tried to give a good PR answer but couldn’t hide how deeply uninterested she was in him 😭😭 the lack of enthusiasm was LOUD Lmao.”
