Iceye wins Scaleup Europe Fund's first investment

ICEYE, the Finnish specialist in SAR imagery (Synthetic Aperture Radar), is formally establishing an Indian entity with ICEYE India, working in New Delhi.

The move extends the company’s presence into what it describes as one of the world’s most significant defense and space markets. With the increasing importance of ‘sovereign’ space capabilities national subsidiaries are often required when bidding for government contracts.

Last month, for example, it formed its German subsidiary.

“Iceye India means real engineering and manufacturing capability on the ground,” said Rafał Modrzewski, the company’s CEO and co-founder. “We’re excited to build this together with the government and local partners and to support India as it strengthens its own sovereign intelligence capability.”

It says it is exploring collaboration across the Indian space ecosystem, including “launch capabilities, electronics and component manufacturers, and technology partners”.

The satellite-based imaging company now has offices in the UK, Finland, Germany, Poland, Spain, Australia, Japan, UAE, Greece, and the US, as well as in New Delhi.

SAR

ICEYE owns the world’s largest SAR satellite constellation. Its software-defined satellites deliver commercial imagery with resolution up to 16 cm. Its high-resolution field of regard extends to 400 km.

The company highlights its “end-to-end sovereign intelligence system”. This spans satellites, ground infrastructure, AI-enabled processing and analytics.

Note that the main advantage of SAR imaging is that it enables persistent situational awareness. That is, day or night, in any weather. It can be described as a type of active data collection. A sensor records the amount of energy that reflects back to it. This makes it responsive to surface characteristics, such as building structures and atmosphere moisture.

It is a “synthetic” aperture because it combines a sequence of data acquisitions from a shorter antenna. This is to simulate what would be a much larger antenna.
