Tony Romo arrested and booked on suspicion of impaired driving in Milwaukee

CBS football analyst and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was arrested Thursday night in Milwaukee on suspicion of intoxicated driving, officials said.
Romo, 46, was pulled over on southbound Interstate 43 at about 6:18 p.m. and he “performed poorly” on standardized field sobriety tests, according to Milwaukee County Sheriff’s records.
Romo was booked on one count of allegedly operating while intoxicated and released.
He was ordered to appear in court on Sept. 21, which would be the Monday night of the NFL’s Week 2. The top CBS matchup of that weekend figures to be the Pittsburgh Steelers visiting the reigning AFC champion New England Patriots.
A spokesperson for the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office told NBC DFW that the incident “remains under investigation and criminal charges have not been filed.”
According to a Wisconsin Legislative Reference Bureau document from 2018, a first-time operating while intoxicated offense is considered a civil infraction. Booking documents said this is Romo’s first offense, NBC DFW reported.
Representatives for Paramount, the parent company of CBS, and Creative Arts Agency, Romo’s listed media agency, did not immediately respond to NBC DFW’s request for comment Friday.
A representative for CBS Sports declined comment to NBC News Friday.
The stop came just hours after Romo wrapped up a golf course interview with NBC affiliate WTMJ, the Milwaukee TV station reported.
The Burlington, Wisconsin, native was back in town to play in the Wisconsin Amateur Championship. He shot a four-round total of 319, good for a 73rd-place tie, 32 strokes back of tournament champ Spencer Turtz.
A cheerful Romo said he takes golf seriously, but appreciates that spinning a football was and probably still is his better skill.
“I’m competitive in both,” Romo told the NBC station. “I am just better at football. But I think we’re gaining strides.”
Romo played in parts of 13 seasons in the NFL, all for the Cowboys, before seamlessly transitioning to the booth with CBS.
He’s one-third of the network’s top NFL broadcast team, alongside play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson. Romo called his third Super Bowl in 2024.
Romo said he respects the passion of NFL fans and hopes to add to their enjoyment every Sunday.
“For me, it is always making the viewer learn something or enjoy the telecast,” Romo told TMJ4 sports director Karley Marotta. “It’s their team. This is a huge deal. I always want them to understand, I get that.”
It wasn’t immediately clear on Friday if Romo had hired a defense attorney to speak on his behalf.
