The Dallas Cowboys are reporting to training camp in Oxnard, CA. The first practice is Wednesday. So far, no drama at camp — the same cannot be said for former starting quarterback Tony Romo.
NBC 5’s Newy Scruggs, NBC 4 New York’s John Chandler, NBC 4 Washington’s (D.C.) JP Finlay, and NBC 10 Philadelphia’s John Clark spoke about the 2026 NFC East division outlook.
Finlay said he expects more of the same from the Cowboys on the offensive side of the ball, but big questions remain about the defense.
“I think it’s pretty clear where the best offense is in the NFC East. And that would be Jerry World, Dallas,” Finlay said. “But I just don’t know about that Cowboys defense, Newy? Have they done enough to maybe make a jump?”
“Well, people here are drinking the Kool-Aid,” Scruggs said. “Christian Parker never called a play. Granted, what he’s done in Philadelphia, his track record in Denver, that sounds good, but you still have to go out here and do it. Do all the pieces fit? I don’t trust their secondary right now. So we’ve got to go to training camp to see who’s healthy. How does everybody adapt to this defense? And then what do you do on game days this first month of the season as you implement it? So defensively, I’ve got questions.”
Scruggs adds the Cowboys should not expect the same success on offense.
“That ain’t the way it works in the National Football League. Let’s see how it goes. You had Javonte Williams, running back, who had a great year. Can he do it again? He was on a free agent contract; now he’s settled with a contract. Is he gonna bring the same juice? We’ll have to see. Can Dak Prescott stay healthy? Because that’s been an issue the last six years with Dak Prescott. So you can talk about the defense, but I still got questions about the offense.”
The New York Giants, behind new head coach John Harbaugh, are looking to bounce back and compete for the division for the first time since 2022.
“I mean, it depends on the talent that’s on the field. We’ve done the new boss thing a few times now over the last, what, five, six, 10 years with the Giants. This is a little bit different, though, because John Harbaugh brings instant credibility,” Chandler said. ” You know, you get a little of that energy with a new coach, and people are desperate for it, but still, what do you have on the field? And to me, it all boils down to what you have at quarterback and running back. Jaxson Dart, Cam Skattebo. Are they healthy? Can they stay healthy? Do they change the way they play? Does Harbaugh rein them in a little bit, or do you just let them go and feed off of that energy? That’s a big question for the Giants.”
The Eagles are coming off back-to-back division championships – the first repeat champions in 20 years.
“I think the defense, which by the way, has given up the fewest points per game in the NFL when the starters are playing under Vic Fangio. And that’s why they won the Super Bowl against Patrick Mahomes. I think that defense will be the thing that’s going to carry them for a little while as the offense is adjusting to Sean Mannion’s new scheme,” Clark said.
The Washington Commanders want a return to their 2024 season form, after missing the playoffs entirely last season.
“I’ll believe it when I see it, okay, it’s been 30 years for the Cowboys, and you guys got to the NFC championship game, but my goodness gracious, back to where it was before,” Scruggs said.
As far as the division winner, Chandler, Clark, and Finlay picked the Eagles. Scruggs disagreed.
“It’s not gonna be the Giants. It’s, I guess, let’s go Eagles. I mean, it’s a, you know, it’s a tough division because I don’t think it’s particularly strong division,” Chandler said.
“I mean, the Eagles 1-53 might be the best roster in the book, so it’s hard not to go, Eagles,” Finlay said.
“Philly won it last year; it was two years in a row, right? That was the first time in like 30 years. Right, right, so three years in a row now, and the fact that there’s a Super Bowl-winning quarterback at Philadelphia who doesn’t get the proper respect he gets, they’re gonna eat him alive, just what they do to everybody in that town, so Dallas is gonna end up winning the division,” Scruggs said.
