Dallas Cowboys reporters talk Schottenheimer, playoffs, and training camp

Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer is heading into his second year on the job with high expectations.
ESPN’s Todd Archer told NBC 5, Schotty knows another losing season is not an option.
“I’m seeing a guy who feels or is growing into the job, feels more comfortable. He’s not been shy in what are the things he’s told us and what he said. It doesn’t seem like he’s sending one message to us and another message to the players, but he’s got to win. 7-9-1 last year wasn’t good enough. If that happens again, we’ll see what happens in 2027,” Archer said.
Archer knows Cowboys fans won’t like this comparison, but Schotty reminds him of a young Jason Garrett.
“You’re not going to like this, or he’s not going to like this. He’s got a lot of Jason Garrett in him, because what he says is a lot of the same things Jason Garrett said. He just does it in a livelier fashion with more personality, maybe more conviction. But the things that he said, they have a leadership council. They had that under Jason. They talk about getting the right kind of guys. They said that under Jayson. So a lot of it is, and it’s not to say Jason was wrong in how he was doing it. Jason Garrett has a record that’s 20- 30 games over 500. But there’s a lot of what Jason Garrett said, and I think that’s, to me, kind of funny when you think back at what Jason Garret did or didn’t do as the head coach for nine years versus what Shawty’s trying to do in his two years,” Archer said. “There was a background between Jerry Jones and Jason Garrett, right? Their families knew each other from his dad. He played here for a long time. And Jason hit it right. Whenever he needed to win, in the last year of his deal, 2014, go 12-4, get another contract. So you know, Shotty’s going to have to do that as well.”
Archer thinks anything less than the playoffs will be considered a failure.
“(Jerry Jones) said it on the opening day of the press conference: that’s to compete and get to the playoffs. And if you get to the playoffs, I think Parcells told him that, like, hey, all you got to do is get to the tournament and you got a chance. I think Jerry has taken that to the Nth degree. I think he views this as a playoff team. And if they don’t get there, you know, I’m not saying he’s going to be on the hot seat, or he’s gonna be gone or anything like that. But there’ll certainly be a lot of questions raised because of the franchise that he works for and because it would be three straight years of this team not making the playoffs, after making it three straight years on a Mike McCarthy,” Archer said.
Schotty is supported by offensive coordinator Klayton Adams, who was also on the staff in year one. Due to the success of the offense, some insiders think Adams could be a head coaching candidate next spring if the Cowboys exceed expectations.
“I see a guy (Adams) who is going to get into that mix for head coaching interviews, as well as Christian Parker, by the way, on the defensive side. But (Adams) will get in that mix, I think, if they have another strong year this year of being, even if he’s not calling the plays like Schottenheimer is. He’s a guy who will get in that mix. He’s in that accelerator program that the league has. He’s really good in the run game. We saw an improvement last year… This year, it’s about getting him more involved in the passing game. He was out here calling plays for one practice. I think four of his first six red zone plays, they scored touchdowns,” Archer said. “I see a guy that the players enjoy, the players like, and a guy who holds players accountable, the whole GOTI (greatest offense there is) thing, right? His are like, yeah, that’s great. And here’s what it does for the coaches. If they have a bad practice, he can say, ‘You guys think that’s GOTI?’ That’s a good thing.”
Archer even joked Adams could take playcalling over from Schotty.

The Cowboys are facing the Los Angeles Rams in joint practice in Woodland Hills, CA, this week.
Players and reporters said its a litmus test for the Cowboys being a competitive team this season, since the Rams are one of the Super Bowl favorites.
“They know the additions that the Rams made on both sides of the football, whether it be Trent McDuffie and Miles Garrett on the defensive side or just returning and developing the guys that they have on the offensive side. So it’s gonna be a big test for them. They have to go up to Woodland Hills. It’s kind of a road game, if you will. I think it’s really gonna be huge. What I’m expecting? I’m expect this offense to produce better than it did last year in that setting. This offense is coming off being the number two offense in the league. They should be able to produce against that defense, even with those new phases that they had involved. Depends if Aaron Donald is in the mix, of course, but I think this offense should be able to get some wins. Defensively, we’re going to be looking just for them to not give up the big plays. That was so big last year, obviously, right? And I think with this new scheme, we’ve really only seen one busted coverage out here in these first seven practices. As long as they can prevent that against Puka Nacua, Devante Adams and the guys that they have over there, then that should be a win for the Cowboys at the end of the day,” Nick Harris, Fort Worth Star-Telegram Cowboys reporter, said.
One Cowboy very familiar with the Rams is 2025 addition Cobie Durant. Durant, a cornerback, played his first four seasons in Los Angeles.
“He has had his whole career with the Rams and now he’s going to be able to pick off Matthew Stafford or try to at least at the end of the day,” Harris said. “I think that’s gonna be a fun battle, him going up against those receivers that he got used to going up against every single day over the last four seasons. So it should be a fun battle for them.”
Joint practice will be on the only time the Cowboys starters will see live action against another opponent before week 1, after Schotty announced most starters will not play in the preseason.
“I think you still will see some key rookies that will get involved in the mix. We’re still determined to see if we’ll see Caleb Downs. Malachi Lawrence: I would expect to see him out there. Jaishawn Barham; now, these two guys (Lawrence, Barham) are not gonna be starters, but they’re gonna be heavy contributors to this defense at the end of the day. And so I think you still are gonna get a glimpse of what this personnel looks like on the defensive side of the ball, especially when it comes to type of pass rushers as well. You know, whether you see a James Houston come out there or a Sam Williams, I think you’re still going to see what they’re going to be asking of guys like Rashan Gary or Donovan Ezeiruaku. When week one does come around, you’ll be able to get glimpses of that. All right, so big week coming up for the Cowboys,” Harris said.
