The Dallas Cowboys have less than a month until they’re taking on the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, Sept 13 on NBC’s Sunday Night Football. The Cowboys are headed to Arizona to play the Cardinals on Saturday, Aug 22 at 9 p.m. Most starters are expected to sit again, like last week against the Seattle Seahawks.
The Cowboys defeated the Seahawks 17-7, not that wins are the focus of training camp or the preseason. Rookie wide receiver Camden Brown has been a camp standout in Oxnard, and he had two touchdown catches against the Seahawks. Brown is trying to secure a roster spot among one of the most talented receiving corps in the NFL.
The Cowboys’ time in Oxnard had several positives, like the signing of Von Miller, the growth of first-round pick Caleb Downs, the contract extension for Quinnen Williams to bolster the new-look defense under coordinator Christian Parker, and the success of returning receivers George Pickens and Ryan Flournoy.
There were also some sour spots, like the $500k worth of fighting that marred their joint practice with the New Orleans Saints, whom they will host in their final preseason game next week. There were also struggles for starting tackles Tyler Guyton (LT) and Terrence Steele (RT).
It’s unclear if the signing of Miller means the team is less likely to make a trade to improve the defense, like team owner/general manager Jerry Jones has mentioned at camp.
The Cardinals were one of the worst teams in the league last season, though they did defeat the Cowboys 27-17 in Arlington. Arizona finished 3-14 and selected Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love with the third overall pick. Love suffered an ankle sprain in the Cardinals’ first preseason game and may not play Saturday.
The Cardinals also have a new coach and quarterback after replacing former Allen High School and Oklahoma Sooners starting quarterback Kyler Murray, who has moved on to the Minnesota Vikings.
The Cowboys play the Cardinals back in Arlington in Week 8, Nov. 1
