The landscape of college sports is nearly unrecognizable from where it was even a decade ago. The introduction of NIL and the limit of restrictions surrounding the transfer portal have allowed students to rightfully receive compensation for putting their bodies on the line, and to pursue better opportunities the same way coaches do, but it has led to competitive imbalance.

Schools in conferences such as the SEC and Big Ten have a massive resource advantage, allowing them to pillage rosters from less resource-heavy universities. Now, one United States senator is moving to try and level the playing field.

“Sen. Tommy Tuberville introduced a new, narrow college sports bill today. It would set eligibility limits at a max of 5 consecutive years to play 5 consecutive seasons. It also allows athletes to transfer one time, any additional transfers requires sitting out a year,” reported ESPN’s Dan Murphy on Twitter.

It’s not the first time formal legislation has been filed with the purpose of addressing the way things stand in the current landscape. The Mississippi House recently “passed a bill to exclude NIL earnings from the state’s income tax,” joining Florida, Texas, and Tennessee, which are income tax-free, along with Arkansas, which is NIL-exempt as SEC schools using legislation to its advantage.

It’ll be interesting to see how far Tuberville’s bill goes.
