The U.S. Air Force has launched a program to develop what could become the world’s longest-range air-to-air missile, a weapon designed to strike targets at distances of at least 1,850 kilometers. The initiative reflects growing concern over China’s rapid advances in long-range missile technology and airborne surveillance capabilities, both of which are reshaping modern air combat.
The new Air Force Long Range Weapon (AFLRW) program calls for two missile variants, one for air-to-air combat and another for air-to-surface missions. Air Force officials have identified the air-to-air version as the top priority, as it is intended to engage high-value targets such as bombers, airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft, aerial refueling tankers, and command-and-control platforms from unprecedented distances.
If completed as planned, the missile would far exceed the range of any air-to-air weapon currently in service. China’s PL-17 is widely believed to have a range of about 500 kilometers, while Russia’s R-37M and the U.S. Navy’s AIM-174 are estimated to reach between 350 and 400 kilometers. The proposed AFLRW would extend that reach by more than three times.
The program is widely viewed as a response to China’s expanding military capabilities. In recent years, Beijing has fielded advanced long-range missiles alongside a growing fleet of AEW&C aircraft, including the KJ-500 and the emerging KJ-3000. These aircraft provide long-range battlefield awareness and help coordinate air operations, allowing Chinese forces to detect and engage threats from greater distances.
The United States, meanwhile, has struggled to modernize its own airborne surveillance fleet. The aging E-3 Sentry is nearing the end of its service life, while the replacement E-7 Wedgetail program has faced delays. Analysts have also noted that China’s AEW&C fleet has expanded significantly, with estimates suggesting around 50 KJ-500 aircraft already in service.
Although the missile remains in the proposal stage, it signals a major shift in U.S. air combat strategy. By dramatically extending engagement distances, the Air Force hopes to threaten the aircraft that support enemy operations long before they can influence the battlefield, potentially restoring a key advantage in future conflicts.
