A rare video recorded at Beale Air Force Base in 1986 captures the Pratt & Whitney J58 engine powering up to maximum afterburner, offering a striking look at the extraordinary technology that propelled the SR-71 Blackbird to speeds above Mach 3.

The test was conducted by U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. John Wiltison and showcased the J58 operating at its maximum afterburner setting. Developed in the late 1950s, the nine-stage axial-flow bypass turbojet was specifically engineered for the extreme speeds, altitudes, and temperatures encountered by the SR-71 and its predecessors.

The J58 produced up to 32,500 pounds of thrust and could consume roughly 8,000 gallons of fuel per hour at maximum output. Exhaust temperatures reached approximately 3,400 degrees Fahrenheit, requiring the engineers to develop new materials, lubricants, hydraulic fluids, seals, and insulation capable of surviving the extreme conditions.

The engine was also unusual in the way it worked with the SR-71’s sophisticated air intake system. At the aircraft’s Mach 3.2 cruising speed, a movable conical spike and a network of bypass ducts controlled the incoming airflow. The system positioned the shockwave precisely within the inlet, allowing the engine to receive stable subsonic airflow.

At cruise speed, the inlet system produced roughly 80 percent of the aircraft’s thrust, while the J58 itself contributed about 20 percent. This effectively turned the propulsion system into a hybrid turbo-ramjet at extreme speed.

Starting the J58 was an engineering challenge in its own right. Ground crews used an AG330 starter cart equipped with two Buick Wildcat V8 racing engines. Together, the engines produced about 600 horsepower and spun the J58 to approximately 3,200 rpm before ignition.

The SR-71 also required a specialized fuel known as JP-7. Its exceptionally low volatility and high flash point prevented it from igniting prematurely in the aircraft’s intensely heated environment. Triethylborane was used to ignite the fuel, while JP-7 was circulated through parts of the aircraft to absorb heat before reaching the engines.

The SR-71 first flew in December 1964 and entered U.S. Air Force service in 1966. It remained the world’s fastest and highest-flying operational aircraft throughout its career, routinely operating around 80,000 feet and reaching speeds above Mach 3.

The Air Force eventually retired the SR-71 fleet in 1990, but rare footage of the J58 continues to demonstrate why the aircraft remains one of the most remarkable achievements in aviation history.
