The Stephen C. Pyotts lived in the same Cameron Hill house from the mid-1880s to just after World War 1. During that time, Pyott was serving as state senator, sheriff, city of Chattanooga auditor and recorder, and deputy Internal Revenue collector.

He was especially drawn to Cameron Hill because he married into the Allisons, who were there before the Civil War.

Stephen Pyott was born near Rhea Springs in Rhea County on December 19, 1853. His parents were Edward and Margaret McPherson Pyott. He attended school at Rhea Springs and later said, "That was my only college course." He clerked on a Tennessee River steamboat in his youth. He gained a law degree and practiced briefly in Chattanooga. He was also a lumber dealer.

Pyott married Nora Louvenia Allison, daughter of the old citizen James R. Allison. The ceremony was October 12, 1880, in James County. The Pyott couple lived briefly at 11 Magazine St., near the top of Cameron Hill before settling in at 501 Cedar St.

Pyott had moved into Chattanooga in September 1875 and expressed an early interest in politics, taking the Republican side. He was elected sheriff in 1884 and served a two-year term. He was elected to the state Senate in 1889 and again served two years. Then he held the city positions before resigning as recorder in 1890 to make an unsuccessful race for county register of deeds. Then he took the federal post, serving from 1898 to 1913.

The Pyott children were William Townsend Pyott and daughters, Mrs. H.R. Day and Mrs. F.S. Barker. Townsend Pyott was a district manager for Penn Mutual Insurance Company in the firm of Pyott & Varnell. He later moved to Nashville. The Days moved to Grand Island, Fla., where her uncle, Sam Pyott, had migrated. The Barkers stayed in Chattanooga.

Stephen Pyott was living near Brown's Chapel when he died in November 1923 at the age of 70.

Abraham Litz and J.E. Carpenter had taken over 501 Cedar St. by that time.
