Community members, veterans, historians, civic leaders and guests gathered at Chattanooga National Cemetery last Saturday for the United States Colored Troops Monument Juneteenth Commemoration, an event "honoring the legacy, sacrifices and enduring contributions of African American soldiers and freedom seekers."
The ceremony, which began at 10:30 a.m., featured the special presentation of the Juneteenth Flag and officially helped launch Juneteenth observances throughout Chattanooga.
The event was presented by the Unity Group of Chattanooga as part of a broader schedule of Juneteenth activities taking place across the city.
The commemorative program included:
- Welcome and Opening Remarks by Eric Atkins, co-chairman of the Unity Group of Chattanooga;
- Prayer offered by Rev. Sheila E. Harris, of St. James AMEC;
- Remarks by Sheila Keith, CEO and president of Keith Monuments;
- Presentation of the Juneteenth Flag and reading of General Order No. 3 by the Unity Group of Chattanooga;
- Remarks and Monument Wreath-Laying Ceremony by the 44th USCT Reenactment Group;
- Participation by Dr. Donald Tatum and members of the 13th USCT;
- Historical presentation by Professor Norton Wheeler; and
- Recitation of Paul Laurence Dunbar's poem “The Colored Soldiers” by Eric Atkins.
Officials said, "A special highlight of the ceremony was a living history portrayal of legendary Underground Railroad conductor and Civil War leader Harriet Tubman presented by local STEAM Teaching Artist Tekelia Kelly. Through historical interpretation, attendees experienced the courage, faith, leadership and determination that made Ms. Tubman one of the most influential figures in American history.
"Often remembered as the 'Moses of Her People,' Ms. Tubman not only led enslaved individuals to freedom through the Underground Railroad, but also became the first black woman to lead a military expedition during the Civil War. Her remarkable legacy continues to inspire generations to pursue freedom, justice, service and leadership.
"At the conclusion of the program, Ms. Kelly led attendees, which included adults and children, in a moving rendition of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” ("Glory, Glory, Hallelujah!"), inviting community members and distinguished guests to join in a spirited sing-along that served as a fitting tribute to the sacrifices of those who fought for freedom and equality.
"The Juneteenth commemoration underscored the importance of preserving history, honoring the contributions of United States Colored Troops, and educating future generations about the ongoing journey toward liberty and justice for all."
