River Arts’ annual “Abstract” show opened on Aug. 18 featuring an array of pieces by artists from across the state. The gallery says the show captures the energy of the thriving contemporary abstract art scene in Maine. It runs through Sept. 26.

Juror Gwendolyn Evans selected works from a record-breaking number of entries. Evans was impressed by the variety and diversity of styles, techniques, and mediums, resulting in what she describes as a tantalizing show.

In conjunction with “Abstract” in the main gallery, Kathy Bourchard’s solo show “Hanging by a Thread” is on display in the River Room. Through a combination of paint, fabric dyes and mixed media, Bouchard creates one-of-a-kind artworks and functional pieces inspired by both nature and imagination. Bouchard’s show continues through Aug. 26.
