If there's one thing I can accomplish in this world, getting one person to disbelieve the myth that the majority of physcal games are just glorified key cards is one of them. However we can't deny that these don't exist at all. To help out, I will provide a list of all the worthwhile games that require an internet connection in order to install and play the game. The numbers next to each game relate to where they fall on Metacritic's best PS5 games list.
28. Balatro (Switch cartridge doesn't require a download, but the PS5 disc does for some reason)
63. Indiana Jones
65. Kingdom Come Deliverance 2
71. Guilty Gear Strive (By technicality, the story mode isn't all on the disc, and that's just cutscenes)
76. Gran Turismo 7 (Is technically on the disc, but you need to the internet to do anything on it)
80. 007 First Rise
85. Absolum (Is all on the disc, but is very prone to crashing without patches)
91. Diablo IV
122. Star Wars Jedi Survivor
140. Hitman 3
156. Hogwarts Legacy
164. Assassins Creed IV Resynced (the game is on the disc, but it needs a patch in order to access the menu)
168. Doom the Dark Ages
172. The Alters
177. Battlefield 6 (Full game is on the disc, but the game won't let you play offline)
202. Helldivers 2 (To be fair, this is an online multiplayer game)
205. Call of Duty Black Ops 6
211. NBA 2K26 (game is on the disc, but the game won't let you play offline)
230. Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remastered
242. Assassins Creed Shadows (same as IV Resynced)
253. Halo Campaign Evolved (Your standard 'beloved' Microsoft release)
268. Avatar Frontiers of Pandora
291. Stalker 2
317. Fatal Fury City of the Wolves (patch needed to access all the characters)
332. Warhammer 4K Darktide
399. Starfield
482. Crimson Desert
576. Star Wars Outlaws
841. Gothic 1 Remake
I studied every game that made at least 80 on Metacritic.

If I made a mistake anywhere, or you know of any other games that aren't playable via the disc alone, let me know, and I'll update the list.
ShadowRJ
I think Star Wars Outlaws. I tried it recently on Plus+ then decided to add it to my physical collection and it did need to download something to play. It wasn't just a patch, it had to be activated.

@GirlVersusGame Added it. Going through the list, I was noticing three recurring patterns...
Ubisoft
TakeTwo
Microsoft
ShadowRJ
@ShadowRJ Ubisoft were one of the earliest I noticed actively doing it, then their CEO followed up with 'people need to get used to the idea of not owning what they pay for', not those exact words but close enough. Some of Hitman games ended up that way because IO Interactive shifted to installments that you download over time, it's how they funded the development of those games. I believe they called them episodes, Hitman 2 especially.
I know with Hitman 3 that was also seen as partly incomplete from day one because they always planned more content/DLC/elusive targets. They didn't want to outright strip players of their rights, they also kept updating the system so that all of the previous content from all of the World of Assassination titles would play through Hitman 3. It was rocky and took them months to iron the bugs out but they did it. I haven't seen any other studio take that approach, or try to preserve their franchise. It's one of my favorite franchises for environmental design, architecture and interior design but it's also a series that does re-release content/remasters like many others. The real difference is that it never seems to be out of sheer greed. More because the fans show real interest in those games. There's a remaster due out next year of even more Hitman games, I'll never see that move as greed, profit of course but I have a lot of respect for that studio and very little for TakeTwo or Microsoft, the same for Ubisoft's CEO.
The company itself (Ubisoft) has a provided me with a lot of content/open-worlds, it's hard to paint them in that same light. Those decisions do come down from the top, all it takes is one bad Skipper, enough rogue waves and people eventually end up overboard. Ubisoft learned the hard way, then were bailed out, their attitude changed after that, it's easier now to not always want to buy their games. That cooperate restructuring is a big part of the push to digital, Microsoft and TakeTwo on the other-hand have no excuse, they are just greedy because they choose to be. Ubisoft needed a subsidiary to help balance their financials and provide that rescue, I don't see firing people as stabilization. Some would say differently, now Tencent have their minority stake and the buyer is being treated like the employee. Badly.

@ShadowRJ I would add some of the big offenders:
Also it is good to include some positivity like:
And some notes from me:

@Zuljaras The Indiana Jones situation is a real head scratcher. The Switch 2 port is really good if you can put up with 30FPS and some pretty aggressive LOD pop-in - for me, the highly cinematic nature of the experience (and the whole thing being on the cartridge) mitigated those negatives.

@LN78 I was surprised as well. Unfortunately I think that they released Indy AND Oblivion like that on the Switch 2 just for the marketing given the feedback from the PS5 print.
Still I am happy to even get something like that even if it is one time deal.
Such releases may shape the whole generation for me

@Zuljaras I was a little disappointed that the DLC wasn't included until I actually played the DLC. No joke, it has one of the most badly designed puzzles I've EVER encountered in a videogame. If I hadn't been on my brother's console at the time, the controller would've been out the window.

@ShadowRJ The PS4 and Switch 1 versions of Hogwarts Legacy don't, it's just the PS5 and Switch 2 versions!
Just a side-note, not correcting you or anything as this is a PS5 thread!

What do you mean? Every version of Hogwarts Legacy is not playable from their physical media, only the 2 minute prologue.

@ShadowRJ Wanted to share a really funny thing here.
This is Anno 117 Pax Romana a PS5 Ubisoft game that has "Internet required to install." I got it yesterday.

The game is installed offline and played normally! No internet is required at all. Even the Sandbox mode is playable.
I think that Ubisoft "messed up" this one and put it playable on the disc
The only other game (single game release) that is in the same situation is The Outer Worlds on the Nintendo Switch 1. It has the Internet Required banner but can be played from start to finish just from the cartridge
