PHILADELPHIA — The Phillies won their eighth game in a row Saturday night, defeating the St. Louis Cardinals 12-3. However, there are some injury situations to monitor.
Second baseman Luis Arraez was removed from Saturday’s game with lower body cramps after a four-run bottom of the third inning against the St. Louis Cardinals. The three-time NL batting champion singled in the home half of the third inning, later scoring on an RBI single by Bryan De La Cruz:
After the game, interim manager Don Mattingly didn’t have many additional specifics about Arraez’s lower body cramps, other than to say “he had a little bit of a history of this when he came over.” The Phillies will see how Arraez is feeling tomorrow before determining whether he’ll be in the lineup as they go for the sweep Sunday afternoon.
Arraez entered the night hitting .310 with a .789 OPS since being acquired from the San Francisco Giants. Additionally, Bryce Harper has seemed much more comfortable passing the baton offensively with Arraez hitting behind him in the lineup.
Derek Hill started the game in center field, plating the aforementioned De La Cruz with a double in the bottom of the third inning. But he was ultimately removed with neck stiffness in the home half of the sixth inning.
In discussing Hill, Mattingly also noted there is a third Phillie who is feeling a bit of discomfort right now.
“It was kind of a weird game from that standpoint of guys getting banged up in there,” Mattingly acknowledged. “Bohmer [Alec Bohm], he had a little tightness yesterday, but when he stretches out, he’s feeling something. We’re gonna have to watch him.”
Bohm is dealing with the tightness in his hamstring and groin area, Mattingly believes. He stretched at first base in an unsuccessful attempt to scoop a throw from Edmundo Sosa in the top of the third inning. The Phillies gave up the DH in the ninth inning and put Kyle Schwarber at first base, taking Bohm out with the game in hand.
With two more hits tonight — including an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning — Bohm is one of the hottest hitters in baseball. We’ll see whether he or Arraez are in the lineup tomorrow, and if Hill is available off the bench.
