Google bid $10 million for the Spirit airline's corporate data: 100 million emails, 500 million Teams messages, and employee files reaching back to 1986. Passenger and loyalty records are excluded, and a judge is set to rule on August 19.

When Spirit Airlines stopped flying in May, it left behind roughly 17,000 former staff and about $8.1 billion in debt. It also left behind decades of ordinary office paperwork. It turns out, that's worth 10 million to Google.

An August 14 filing in the US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York shows Google won the auction for the collapsed carrier's enterprise data and software code. The haul is pretty enormous: around 100 million emails, 500 million Microsoft Teams messages and collaboration records, and material covering revenue management, aircraft operations, audits and fraud investigations. More than 175,000 employee records reaching back to 1986 are also included. Google beat AI recruitment firm Mercor.io which bid $7.5 million (and is named as backup buyer if the deal collapses).

Google has said the material could help improve its products and AI systems. They also added that personal information will be stripped by a third party before handover. The filing excludes the obvious consumer material outright: no profiles for Spirit's 97.5 million passengers, no records for its 52.4 million loyalty members, and nothing on 740,000 co-branded cardholders.

Deidentification is doing heavy lifting across 100 million emails written by people who never imagined their employer would be liquidated and their inboxes sold. There are near-countless payroll and staff files inside the package. Nobody can say for sure whether scrubbing survives contact with data at this scale or not. However, the sale is not final. Judge Sean Lane is supposed to consider approval on August 19. Until then, what happens to Spirit's digital is entirely in the court's hands.
