It is almost September already (how is that possible??) and we’ve been talking Fall Trends lately here at TME. At the top of my list this year is rugby shirts (along with anything and everything chocolate brown, balloon pants and possibly culottes). As someone whose style leans more boho than preppy, I wasn’t expecting to fall for rugby shirts as hard as I did. It’s not exactly like rugby shirts are new to the style game, but this year there seems to be an abundance of cool rugby shirt and sweater options, and it’s making it impossible to look away.

How to Style a Rugby Shirt for Fall: 7 Easy Outfit Ideas

What sparked my newfound love of rugby shirts? It all started with Quince’s Cotton Cashmere Rugby Polo Sweater, in chocolate brown and light blue: the colors, the quality and the price all made this one of my easiest decisions ever. Then, I started noticing just how many cute rugby shirts and sweaters there are out right now like this Good American Oversized Rugby Sweater and this Polo Ralph Lauren Cotton Rugby Shirt. So, to justify my need for more rugby shirts, I started putting together some outfit ideas, and as it turns out, rugby shirts go with pretty much everything.

Outfit 1: Quince Cotton & Cashmere Rugby Sweater + Reformation Olina Pants

The rugby sweater that started it all, this Quince Cotton Cashmere sweater is only $60 and comes in four other great color combos. I love pairing chocolate brown with pops of interesting colors and these chartreuse Olina Cropped Pants pair perfectly with this sweater and my go-to Samba Janes in chocolate brown.

Outfit 2: Polo Ralph Lauren Rugby Shirt + Mother Lemon Twist High Waist Jeans

This blue Polo Ralph Lauren Rugby Shirt is another option that I can’t stop thinking about. I love the more casual vibes of this rugby shirt and it would make the perfect everyday/all-day outfit option paired with a really cool pair of wide-leg jeans, Clare V.’s Grande Woven Belt Bag and a pair of Adidas sneakers.

Outfit 3: Good American Rugby Shirt + Reformation Satin Lace-Trim Shorts

Pairing a maroon and navy rugby shirt with satin lace-trim shorts and a pair of Adidas Taekwondo Mei Ballet Flats is the perfect transitional season outfit. You can easily swap out the shorts for a pair of navy satin pants or even track pants when the weather finally starts to cool down.

Outfit 4: Re/Done Stripe Cotton Crop Rugby Polo + Kenneth Cole Culotte Denim Shorts

This outfit ended up being one of my unexpected favorite outfit collages of the whole post, and it incorporates another trend that I am intrigued with right now: culottes. I love how these black denim culottes are paired with kitten heel thong sandals to add some femininity to the look, and when it gets too cold out for sandals, I’d swap the thong sandals for some chunky black loafers.

Listen, I cannot get enough chocolate brown for the fall and winter. How is it that up until a couple of years ago, I had basically nothing chocolate brown in my closet and now it is my go-to, especially for accessories and outerwear?? All of the items in this collage have been heavily on my mind for fall (and you already know how much I love these Dolce Vita Kitten Heels) and when all paired together: a pretty close-to-perfect fall outfit, at least in my book.

I pulled this look together with similar pieces to those I already have in my closet to validate that I can easily incorporate a rugby shirt into my everyday wardrobe this fall. I love how great rugby shirts and sweaters go with a pair of casual jeans and then depending on what footwear you add to your outfit: sneakers, ballet flats, or kitten heels, you get a different vibe that totally still works.

Here’s another outfit combo that I can’t get out of my head: a denim midi skirt and knee high boots with a rugby polo sweater. This is such a classically sharp, yet comfortable outfit combo that would work in an office setting (maybe with some flat shoes instead). A simple, yet sophisticated outfit idea with some chunky resin bangles and cool sunglasses.
